On 16 December I recieved an invitation to comment on a proposed vision for the foreshore of Cottesloe. The proposed vision includes a jetty extending from the groyne in a arc to about 50-100m infront of the bell. My concern is that this may destroy the waves at Cott Main.

I urge all surfers to visit the Cottesloe Council Web site and submit a feedback form to register concern at this proposal

Details of the vision, the plan, a video and a feedback form are at www.cottesloe.wa.gov.au/?p=681

The comments I submitted are below

Regards
Russell Curtin

What could be improved?

Relocate the proposed jetty to a position that currently has no surfable waves, in a way that will create a wave, for example on the reefs north of Cott main, North Cott or Grant Street. Lets not destroy a great recreational facility, maybe create one. Surfing has never been more popular and with the growth of this city there will be more and more people looking for a wave. Just look at the Cott beaches on any good day with swell, summer or winter - literally hundreds of people surfing between Slimey's at Cottesloe and Cables in the south.

What do I dislike about the vision?

The jetty - it appears this will adversely affect the surf at Cottesloe Mainbreak. Cott is one of Perth's best beach break surf waves and when it works, it is one of Australia's finest waves. Some of the days late this winter were an exellent example of this. I grew up surfing this wave and I live in Cottesloe so my kids can grow up enjoying the same surfing lifestyle that I had the good fortune to experience. The video presentation sets out that you want to use and enhance on the existing features and facilities. This jetty will destroy one of the best natural features of Cottesloe - its surf.

Hi there RussC.

Looks like the site is down: 18:50.

Agreed with you about making more surfable waves.

Fair enough, might have talked it up a bit, but saying Cott is an average beakbreak that barely ever works may have detracted from my submission to the council

And when I was 10 on a foamy it was paradise!

i think cott needs a clean up and more facilities but building a jetty there is pointless and would adversely affect activities at the surf club, also how would this project be funded?
what would be the benefits of this structure in the sea

i dont know the full story behind this but i dont like the idea of cott council controlling such a development.
