Hey Peeps,

Over the last week or so a few people including myself have noticed a new trick starting to be performed at various beaches in Perth (Scarborough and Pinnaroo mainly). The art of walking your kite up the beach pathway to the car park whilst the kite is still flying.

I know the wind hasn't been too strong and the kites are small, and ... blah blah blah, but the people performing this trick are hooked in and the path is only about 12 feet wide. If your kite luffs, or you get a good gust when you're off balance, there's gonna be trouble! The wind in this part of the beach is not the steadiest wind in the area.

I know that some of these new tricksters are talented riders and have flown kites for ages, the problem is, with so many newbies at the beach now and Euros by the truckloads who haven't been here before, it sets a dangerous example for others who are less skilled to follow.

This also goes out to a very well known and respected WA kiter who threaded their kite between the trees at Pinaroo into the carpark. C'mon, bad example before the newbs at Pinnaroo!

All we need is one good gust or a bad luffing in the carpark to create a serious accident and the accesss to our beloved beaches could be in jeopardy, especially if it makes the newspapers or worse still ACA or the TV news.

C'mon everyone, a little sand on your kite is not worth jeopardizing your health and our rights to use the beach. Newbies and Euros are so impressionable this time of year!

I don't wanna start a bun fight, just a change of behaviour before it gets out of hand. Thanks for your understanding.

Luv yas all, good winds,

Kitehard,
Dicking around up narrow pathways while flying a kitesurfing kite is not a 'trick'.......

It's a sh1t-for-brains activity that's indicative of the 'look at ME' mind-set,
combined with pure laziness and dumb-ass thinking.

Saw a few guys doing it at Long Reef (NSW) too... not sure why... it is only 25m walk.

I agree totally! Just looking cool till we all get kicked out.

Important to lead by good example and do communicate with others........nicely with a smile, that's all you can do.

At most beachs here in WA the locals all know each other, it is up to them to address the "guests," be they Euros, Melbounites, Africans...the guy from the other beach etc. One just needs to be friendly about it all I feel....not a hard thing to do for the majority.

But, there will always be people who know better, until something happens to wake everyone up again....sad but true.

talking of new tricks i witnessed a fantastic trick the other day, first off you kite until its pitch black in an out going tide in a river mouth, then you get up lots of speed head towards rocks and land your kite on a street light, its soo extreme, ever heard a kite sizzle on a hot light bulb? i have, then when a local approaches you for a friendly chat and some advice on landing behave like a ****er and dismiss all advice, oh and make sure youve only been kiting for a week or so.

Great trick. LOL

coming from the guy who doesn't wear a leash

Not my idea but a cool new trick would be a Loop Man (deadman kiteloop)

Spacemonkey,
Are you still using your strangle-pass leash ?
Oh yeah, that's right.
You don't kite waves.
Cool.

No i use 5th element, and to ride waves properly i believe you must unhook. 5th line never strangles. I don't want to get in a petty arguement so i will leave it at that....

Dear Spacemonkey!

Who said kitesurfing waves 'properly' required unhooking ?
I need to dump power quick and then load-up fast when I kite waves.
Kiting unhooked doesn't lend itself to instant depower/power.

Riding waves unhooked could be a cautionary approach.
Who knows ?
Maybe handy for chucking handle-passes in the barrel.

Cool Trick ????

You aint seen nothing yet.

Our famous mate **** came flying in towards the beach last year and lost his edge. Kite went accross the window and dragged him up the beach like a crash test dummy, over the wall, over a fence and navigated his attached body through several trees in the park. THEN kite went through the window the other way and he went back through the trees, back across the fence, down over the wall and back accross the beach where the kite finally crashed.

Now **** always wears a helmet, always uses an impact vest, flys a crossbow and kites well offshore.

this problem of guys walking there kite to the carpark or wherever appears to be a problem everywhere, and i dont think there is a worse example than that of the guy who was riding the grey switchblade today at shearwater not only walking to the car with his kite up but actually driving away to grab a low carb "snack" everyone knows the wind at runaway bay maccas is notoriously gusty, crazy but true.

Regards,

This walking around with your kite in the air is a direct result of certifed instructors

Beach teaching,

If you'd bother to do it right: Teach that the beach is for launching and landing only you'd not be the responsible party.

Why do folks walk upwind with kites? because they are taught from the beach.

They are instructed to do that.

So Yeah, (lol) now it's their irresponsible action !!

You're all so aghast !!!!

LOL,,,

It's a taught behavior,,, a beach theacher (IKO) program problem.

Get a boat!!! that way you "CAN" teach respect for the beach.

It's your fault,,not the sudents, they learned by walking around on the beach with a kite in the air.

Because you taught them to.

What is a better wave to get back upwind when your learning then? given the fact that theres not always someone around to help you land and walk back up.

In flat water I bodydrag but in the surf its difficult
