crazy... why would 57% of WA people not be looking foward to having an extra hour of daylight after work to either play with their kids, kite, do sport, enjoy the many great attractions of the state...

I have done a lot of traveling over the last 12 yrs and every where you go that has daylight savings embraces it with 2 hands... why are WA folk so against it...?

It is ridiculous... something to do with getting the kids to bed and farmers working at the hottest part of the day! Probably more to with those freakish morning people that walk their dogs at 05:00am. All i care about is being able to go kiting after a day of sitting in the office! It is our reward for working enslaving ourselves to the 8-6. I am from the UK and it gets dark at 11:00pm in the summer!

Ohh man DLS just must be made an 'every year' thing, only way to get mid week kite fix for us office bound suckers. If it gets dumped in the referendum I will be looking for a new career, or a new state to live in - but the wind is sooo good here....have to be new career.

it makes the day way too long if you start it at 5:30.
I dont care about the sunrise being later but most of the other people that i row with hate it, for most the time in the morning before the seabreeze is a lot nicer than having those nasty windy arvos

Why was there no one kiting at pt walter this morning, it was perfect conditions?

WA people are not specifically against daylight saving, they are just against pretty much anything that involves change. "Its too much hassle", my work colleagues tell me? really? what changing all those digital clocks?

The backwards nature is what appeals about the state, but at the same time can be a right royal pain in the a..

I remember hearing some Old lady saying "I hate daylight savings The extra hour of daylight is going to fade my curtains!"

You just can't argue with that logic

I say bring on the extra hour

And in regards to having to get out in the dark, we do it winter and dont complain, just leave your lights on ur bike.

I know my dad hates it cause we go crayfishing in the morn, and we used to have a boat with no nav lights on it, so when it would usually be light we would go crayfishing. so Daylight savings made it hard cause he had to go to work, and the time was too close to go out at 6 when its light, then get back by 7.

But We have a new boat now so im pro summer time. working at a cafe on the beachside means more customers in the arvo=hence more work=more money=more kites. seems like logic to me

Infinidie I am not having a go at you but it seems that a comment like "DST is no good because we had a boat that had no navigation lights" is typical of those opposing DST...not terribly convincing and the rest of society should suffer as a result??? Thankfully you got a new boat then.

Poor old WA, hates the dullsville tag but won't move with the times. Daylight saving is a bit like the shop trading hours debate. It seems to work everywhere else but not here.
Good luck to those people who have time to cycle, swim or whatever in the morning, most of us have to go to work.
So bring on the extra hour in the arvo and those of us who work can enjoy the quality lifestyle perth offers for a little longer

You city slickers don't know the first thing about farming! With daylight savings how will the cows know what time to come in for milking? Also if the tractor breaks down and we need to get parts for it, the shops will close an hour earlier, hold on they will also open an hour earlier, hhmmmm.

sorry to sound like a boring fart but the way a question is worded and the timing of a poll can effect the outcome of a poll .For example this poll asks whether people are looking forward to it .At the moment most people say no (they are not being asked whether there should or should not be daylight saving,if that question was asked in a few weeks when people are used to it I'd say there would be a different outcome)
For me personally I am looking forward to the earlier start next year (beginning of OCT) because I am sick of the dog walkers going past my place at first light 4.45 am and setting my yappy dog off .However I am not looking forward to dragging my lazy teenage daughters out of bed an hour earlier for school next week as a result of daylight saving (we are getting them up 15 mins earlier each day this week to get them used to the idea)

Hope I make sense

Cows dont really care! have you asked them? I am all of the against arguments I have ever heard are pathetic. Lifestyle and sanity is much more important in todays 'modern' society where we have to work more and play less!

I forgot to mention the demographic of the poll .It would be possible that alot of people getting on are retirees listening to the ABC and jumping on and having their say

My point is i wouldn't worry too much about this poll

I am currently working in a region where for the last 3 weeks its been 40 degrees...it gets to 50 in summer. Although I'm all for it, I'm not looking foward to working an extra hour in those ridiculous temperatures. Thank god I'm in the office.

It's all good when I'm back in Perth though!

I don't think it'll last past the trial period. Young people love it, old people hate change...we're a top heavy society unfortunately.

Please note that the online poll is not, nor is it intended to be, statistically valid. It is simply a "straw poll", a method of gaining a rough idea of community feelings on any given topic.

Consequently the results should not be the subject of any serious interpretation or analysis.

This week's question:

Daylight saving kicks in this weekend. Are you looking forward to it?
Yes 34%
No 65%
Doesn't make much difference to me 1%
4160 votes counted

All this proves is that 2704 miserable people were otherwise bored of their own awful existence and happened to be browsing on the Internet.

Bring on day light savings baby!

Wont you be working an hour less in the heat with DST ie you effectively start an hour earlier in the cool time and finish an hour earlier when its hot in the afternoon.

Mr Float is quite right of course. The answer should only reflect the exact question although in this case it's generally as simple as FOR or AGAINST. I don't think there would be many kitesurfers who work daytime hours in Perth and elsewhere who would vote against it considering they get an extra hour of usable sea-breeze on weekdays.

Unfortunately, I believe that there has NEVER been a referendum that has changed the existing status in the history of WA so it doesn't look too good for the future vote even when it happens.

From where I sit it seems to be an "old fart" versus "young dude" debate. Some of us (like me) are currently 12 going on 13 (so I'm told) so will just have to vote FOR!!!

I wouldn't dream of trying to influence anyone else's vote but don't worry guys, most of the old farts will be dead before long and kitesurfers will rule!!!

Bring on summer!!

The problem, as I understand it, with the WA electoral system is that it isn't compulsory to vote on local or state matters. Therefore only those that feel passionately about an issue, or feel morally obliged, actually vote... everyone else can't be bothered until they're inconvenienced by some factor later on, and all that can be done then is wingeing and whining. DLS is just another local issue that is largely ignored by the people it would serve best.
