UNFORTUNATELY THE PIN HAS BEEN PULLED ON THIS DUE TO LACK OF SNOW. IT IS SET TO BE RESCHEDULED IN A FEW WEEKS AND I WILL KEEP YOU ALL POSTED.

A demonstration day has been sanctioned by the management at Perisher to take place beside the carpark.
This is to take place on July 22nd and 23rd from 11am.
Management from Perisher and Parks NSW will be there to view the sport and assess it’s viability for introduction onto the mountain.
We are seeking MAXIMUM 20 PEOPLE who are willing to participate to email details to me before hand as well as your experience level so that we can get an idea of what to expect on the day.
WE MUST have people who are capable of snowkiting (no first timers, unless you are a National level kitesurfer on the competitive circuit, as that will most likely ruin any chance of us ever getting onto the mountain)

Please post your details or pm me with your details and I will get back quickly

Good luck. And if you are planning on having it beside the carpark at Perisher then you are right in thinking you will need very experienced people! I hope it goes well though.

My question is: is snowkiting in all of the National Park contingent on this demonstration?

I sure hope not because it is a terrible choice of location

How exciting, we will fully support the demo days.
Soonee two of my guys Ben and lance want to go up. Ben rides for slingshot and lance is teaching advance moves, also a mate of mine Nathan is keen.
So put St kite down for 3 maybe more.

Ben has Snowkited in that spot last year for 2 days and said it was fine. Back country would be better, but i guess the management wants us close to see how it all goes.

All good, Nic

PS: Soonee don't invite the negatave people it doesn't matter how good they think they are, to build something new is inspiring don't let it be distroyed, before it begins.

After talking to a few very experienced snowkiters about this, there seems to be quite a bit of concern among them about this demonstration. Mainly their concern is that this could get them banned, given the location of the display and the potential for carnage. It's not clear to me if this is likely..so, again, can we please find out if this display is being used to inform a decision about kiting in all of the National Park or just the ski fields (which are more or less off limits anyway).

Please don't rip into me about this - I am not doubting the abilities of the people you have enlisted etc, and I think it's great that someone has the gumption to get it organised, but I am just after some information.

Thanks

What would be nice is if the few very experenced Snowkiters would help out. From what i understand this demo is sanctioned by all the right people on the mountain. The more experienced the better.

stnkygoat i think from what Soonee said it is for the Perisher management to get a better idea on what is involved in the sport. You and your friends have the same concerns as the first Kiteboarders had and as in Melbourne going through the right channels with the powers to be shows them that it is not a Cowboy sport and we as a responsible group of sports people can work with them.

Soonee needs people that can showcase the sport in the safest way.

All good, Nic

yep, i'll second that, take all the precautions you can, i might wanna snow kite when i get a bit better at kitesurfing and i don't want it to be banned by some cowboy. Hopefully there will be a few responsible, experienced kiters there and the location they are given is a roomy, safe one. (also theres not much snow yet so watch those rocks!)

sounds like fun but that spot is usually very crowded with kids toboggining and playing in the snow.

and I fell through the ice there into the river 3 years ago at about 6am in the morning. lost both my ski boots and had to run barefoot over the whole length of the carpark to get inside.

If there is enough snow there is a large open field on the left hand side of the road just before the road goes downhill and you see sponars Chalet. also a few open areas near the road to Charletts(sp?) pass.

I will take my kites up next year and give it a go.

Yes if the wind is from the southeast then kiddies pulling toboggans will be directly downwind... Whatever the case at this location there will be small children that will be scared of the kites, and adults who dont know enough to keep themselves and their kids well clear.

Unfortunately this is not a good spot either as there are powerlines and there would only be enough snow cover here on the best weekends of the season.

^^^ This is the best spot yet proposed. ^^^

Your other reasonable option would be top of thredbo, but i guess that would exclude the perisher guys...

Point is perisher blue have absolutely no room that they could designate as a dedicated snowkiting area anyway, so i don't see exactly what good would come of demoing the sport for them adjacent to their carpark and kiddy play area.

Why do you think it would be good for their business??

Just to give a bit of background to stinky's sensitivities- we were up doing a kite-skiing shoot for the ABC last year, with co-operation from National Parks to provide a snowmobile for filming. When someone in parks management heard "we were flying kites" they pulled the ranger and his snowmobile saying they wanted to discourage kiting in Kosciusko National Park.

I agree Perisher carpark isn't the best place to fly, but it's not the worst either. I am however totally paranoid about flying near any authority figures within the National Park (which includes thredbo and Perisher). If you want to kite in the park there's very little they can do about it, short of chase you around on snowmobiles, but we were made clear that kiters weren't welcome.

Bear in mind, it's also illegal to take a **** in the park this year, unless you pack it out in a bag, so don't get caught with your pants down.

Thank you Ben and let me say 'a well regarded person you are too' ,you who are doing much to put kites in the public eye and we respect that. Ice bird and the South pole etc. I commend and envy you.

As for the points you raise I emphasise that the whole shebang is going to go very pear shaped very quickly unless some quick steps are put in place to try and ratify the whole deal.

Yes the carpark is a terrible spot but this is just to provide somewhere for those who decide to come and have a look.

It is basically fall into line and survive as a sport or run the gauntlet and die. Up to you?

it wasn't that many years ago, while running a ski lodge, that i heard a rumour about perisher wanting to charge people money to go cross country skiing. at the time it was regarded as a fee to pay for the maintanance of the cross country trails. i hope this isn't an opportunity for perisher to acquire some sort of licence (permit system) for kiting.
i wouldn't trust them. kiting does not make money for Packer$$$

It looks like there is a going to be a place to stay on the mountain for about 14 or however many we can cram into the place, Accom would be for Fri and Sat nights we already have about 10 booked.

u could call me paranoid but isn't this just perisher going about the right way of banning snow kiting (i haven't done it yet would love to give it a go). they can say that they researched the sport and even had u demonstrate for them and after all this they have come to the conclusion that it is far to dangerous 4 kites and skiers to mix in perisher. it would b hopeless 4 u 2 argue against it unless u guys have unlimited free time and money at your disposal-if ya did im sure u would just go overseas to kite anyway.
putting them in such an authoritative position can only lead to problems in my opinion. they wouldn't let u kite 4 free that's 4 sure (as batton holder said). but im just a kid with a keyboard and I'm sure u will not jeopardize your chances in anyway.

Happy kiting

These are all valid points, and require careful thought.

We have already gone to Perisher and spoken to the top Dogs they were very very open to the idea of finding a place for Snowkiting on or near there mountain, they see how big it is in Europe and want it as well as us Kiteboarders.

I am not so concerned with fees as they will still need us to get lift passes and park entrance fees. So far all the I's have been dotted and T's crossed, this is the next step.

my understanding is that this event is being done WITH the support and co-operation of Perisher management so they have the power to keep the area clear of people and other dangers....so there's no danger of kiters being seen as cowboys so long as evrybody behaves reasonably on the day. it's a great opportunity for the sport to raise its profile......keep positive

Hope you folk aren't going to be using 25m lines. I would use a foil with 6m lines but lines anything above 10m and people won't like it. Foils look less dangerous to mothers with toddlers.

In Switzerland my young uncle told me he Speed Flies: http://www.gingliders.com/products/nano.php

I know this is a little of topic. But for those of you wanting to experience something similar to Snow kiting... you could always try Kite Sandboarding, it's less painful when u hit the deck, seasons always on and Stockton dunes Port Stephens is HUGE! And Fraser Island usually has good wind and is ALL sand.

PS: U can buy my sandboard here: cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=005&item=150005400424

Thank's hungry you are spot on. I don't think there will be any worry about kiddies tubing on the days in question. All of this is going to be well taken care of and it is only meant as an accessible spot not a spot to be designated as the only spot forever.
