Having recently lost a harness I have been looking through the lost and found section and have realised how many lost items there are and so few found items. This makes me wonder what sort of people kitesurfers are?

There is not much else that kitesurfing gear can be used for other than kitesurfing. Even though stupidity plays a large part of loosing something, one would expect someone to at least try to find the owner of something they find.

What are your thoughts?

I lost a board and it was up on seabreeze later that night, don't really agree that kiters are not honest. Yours may just not have been found yet.

yeh i agreew with rossouwe. I left a harness behind on the beach one day, and the bloke that owns the sunny coast store grabbed it for me and kept it at his shop. Wouldnt even except a carton for a thankyou.

Top bloke.

Yeah and don't forget that most gear would be picked up by non-kiters...

You're assuming all kiters in your area view this forum?

Did you have your mobile number written on it so people who don't use the forum can call you?

Totally true. You question the character of kitesurfers because you lose gear?

In my experience kitesurfers usually drop found gear into their local kite shop.

The fact that you made this post makes me wonder what sort of person you are! Troll perhaps?

Count the first page of lost and found 17 lost -- 10 found
Pretty good display of honesty of you ask me.

Bet you don't see that in any other sport!

I agree,

Most stuff is returned if the finder can determine the owner and how to contact them. In other words, write your name and phone number and also "reward" on your gear and you will never lose it.

We always scan the beach at dusk before we leave and find all sorts of stuff left behind. Bars, harnesses, boards , towels and sunnies. We hold them for about a year and then we either sell or toss it depends on what it is.

All the kiters i know are as honest as the day is long, I'm glad I don't kite where you are.

Good winds,

I agree with you spot I left my lines on the beach one arvo and whoever found them washed up on the beach with the tide didn't even finish untangling them before winding them on the bar. Talk about p********* off the next day when I found them next to where I pump up the kite

When I lost my board, i ran up and down the coast looking for it. Couldnt find it, so out of desperation i started asking anyone who had done a downwinder if they had seen it on their run.
When i was just about to give up, i asked pretty much the last people of the day. They found it, and burried it on the beach for me (in a spot they could remember, so it wouldnt get nicked). I told them the name on the bottom, and they told me where to find it.
I think the best idea is to permanent maker your name and phone number on the board.

Lol. I wouldnt untangle the lines. As if someone would spend a hour plus untangling some elses lines, who forgot them, while the wind was cranking. I hate untangling my own lines enough.

I had a difficult issue with this at Brighton (Melbourne) a few weeks ago. A guy was flying a kite on the beach (not enough wind to go in the water) and after packing up had left his bar and lines on the beach.
There were still a few hours till dark and practically no-one on the beach. I had packed up my gear and was looking at the bar and lines thinking 1. Take the bar and lines, make a post on Seabreeze and arrange a hookup. 2. Drop off the bar and lines to a nearby retailer and hope he would think to go there and ask. 3. Leave the bar and line on the beach in the hope that the guy would realise he was missing them when unloading his gear and come back before dark to pick them up. I don't know what a "typical" Seabreeze reader/poster looks like, but got the feeling that this guy wasn't a regular.
With about 2/3 hours till darkness, I chose option no. 3.
I think a bar and lines is safest from non kiting punters "discovering" unlike boards, which seem to march off pretty quickly. It actually took some time to think through the options, but top of mind was what would be the most practical solution, trying to put myself in the mindset of someone who had lost the gear, and their most likely behaviour.
Whether I got it right or wrong, I'm not sure.

1.....knots

2.....elevation

even if they dont look like the type that would use seabreeze. i'd take the bar and lines, and put a note up infront nearby where they were found.

So you're assuming two things:

1. All kitesurfers frequent this forum.

2. That your lost gear and that of every other kitesurfer is actually found.

I think that's a bit daft.

mate I've found boards bags bars and have always got it back to the owner within the week, also had people go out of their way, miss some time on the water to look for my board. Your remarks don't wash. Why even speculate bad vibes

The majority of kitegear lost at the beach is picked up and taken home by non-kiters. Who knows what they do with it. I once left a bar and lines on the beach at S Narrabeen while packing up after dark. Came back the next day and posted a sign and picture of it with my contact details on a post at the beach entrance. Three days later I got a call from a lady who found it on her morning walk, had no idea what it was and took it home and threw it in the laundry room. Said she thought it looked "interesting" and was planning to "cut up the strings and give them to her kids to play with"... The rest of the world does not view the universe through "kite goggles"...

FWIW, despite common misconception, the law is not "finders keepers"--if you find something that does not belong to you, legally, you are obligated to turn it in to the police. The police are obligated to keep it for a period of time (varies by state). If it's not called for and claimed by the owners after that time then the finder is permitted to collect it and keep it. I wonder how often this EVER happens, in reality? I do know of one instance of someone who found a board at Longy a few years ago, handed it over to police and we advertised it high and low in all the shops, all the forums and put signs on the beach, and still the owner never did come looking for it and the finder did eventually claim it back from police, so it often goes the other way too...

I really agree that you either take it and drop it into the nearest kite shop or hang on to it, cause your sure to see them or hear about it. I guess it all depends where you are but I have left my bag and pump on the beach as many times as the rest of you and never had it taken but I have heard stories. More worried about the size I`m not using that is locked in the car!

Im the opposite. I am usually amazed of how honest other kitesurfers are.
Ive left plenty of things on the beach, and they have always been found and returned.

When you are looking in the lost and found, i think you will find that most stuff is fouind and returned... people just dont update the thread.
ie I have 2 threads on there where I have lost things... and I have not updated them althtouhg I have got my stuff back.

I posted some 'found' gear on the forum in March.

A couple of dubious people were trying there luck claiming it was theirs when it was found at a different location and weeks apart! pretty disappointing.

got a lot of annoying text msgs and when I phoned them up to find out what the deal was they seemed to go pretty quiet and not so keen to get their gear back. Weird.

the two times i have left stuff at the beach the same person has picked it up and dropped it off at my place, I have never seen him out on the water but wow the chances of the same guy being out there the two times and picking up my stuff are so slim its creepy.

If you lose a board in the channel at Dolls Point be prepared for the tide to take it to who-knows-where. Many boards have never been recovered after a trip to the Dolls Triangle.

The best story I've heard on getting your gear back was from a girl here in Perth. She got a call one day from people on a fishing charter, they'd found a board 40kms out to sea and luckily it had her phone number on it.

She was stoked thinking it was long gone. Always put your number on the board and at least you have a chance of getting it back.
