Im new to the Sydney kiting scene. Went out at Dolls Point this arvo.
It was mayhem. Kites and kiters everywhere. Granted the wind was fairly easterly but it seemed like dodgem cars out there and it seemed to me that a lot of kiters really didn't know what the were doing out there. Just getting in everyone's way.

I did notice one kiter who really seemed to know what it was about. He was flying a blue and yellow Best 16m I think. He was wearing a white hat. If anyone knows who he is please advise as I wouldn't mind getting a few tips.

thanks

Hi Kiterider,

I was at Dolls today too. Easterly crack onshore is pretty dangerous for most. I left to go to another spot. It was very dangerous there today. People scattered on the beach, Kiddies running around, disaster waiting to happen, some kiters stupidly close to powerlines and people.

No room for error in those conditions better to go to other locations or not go kiting at all.

Check out www.nswkba.com.au for info on local spots and its dangers.

All the best

Thanks Uber, It definitely was no place for the weak hearted. On two seperate occassions kiters crossed lines and bought kites down. That sought of dopiness will cause major hassles for kiting locations anywhere. Does anyone try to keep order at Dolls Point. It certainly seems to need it.

Where did you relocate to when you left. Im keen to find out as much as I can about the Sydney scene.

thanks

Top shot , that kiter is my type of rider. Where does he leave his horse tied when he's kiting.
kiterider - maybe the bloke in the picture should have taken the kiterider handle - he certainly looks like he knows how to take his BUCKS. ( steady fellas - I did say BUCKS )
cheers

We went to Boat Harbour and it was 9 knts, Then we went to Kurnell and it was about 11-13 knts. Only 2 others went out for a quick run. My friend put up a 20mt. Not a good day at all.

Your right about Dolls it needs to be policed. Today was just not my idea of fun. Only 1 guy was cranking up wind when i was there and he was on a new model SS machine. All the rest were fighting it out close to shore.

I always thought onshore meant dont kite??? If your an advanced rider fair enuff but otherwise I dont think it was worth it.

Dave, Nice shot of Ian in his Dundee outfit, I wander if thats his shark wrestling do, No crocs in the Bay is there?

G'day Kiterider

It was me in the floppy old white hat the the blue and yellow Yarga 17M, red 1.58SB
Yes is was mayhem at Dolls yesterday, thats why I stayed over there all day. Ian the other guy that wears a hat came out later on a Blue/blue 16M Flow.

It was ESE, which is almost directly onshore, and always a bad direction for Dolls when the wind is light!!!!

We had someone decide to test the safety on a Sonic, so close to the path that their kite crashed hard right across the path, lucky there were no pedestrians there at that moment - he copped a big yell from me!!

Then we had Alex Sanz here, he was riding mountainboards on the footpath with hundreds of people walking past, sssssoooooo friggin stupid, add to that landboarding on the beach in amongst the kitesurfers, trying to sand board directly downwind towards the path and the houses, with the kite over the path, road and houses.
Unless this guy changes his attitude, and behaviour he is fast becoming the biggest threat to access at any local kite spots he visits.
I spoke to him and asked him to stop riding on the path, and he did for the remainder of the day, but that does not mean he will not do it again tomorrow if I'm not there.

We all need to take a stand and let Alex know that his show off behaviour, and care less attitude (because he can jump in his truck and drive to another spot after getting one shut down), will not be tolerated at popular kite spots around the East Coast. If you see him doing something stupid PLEASE go and let him know as loudly as necessary!!!!!

Kiterider, I own the shop near Dolls, come and see me, we are always keen to help new people, epsecially ones like you that scope out an area first.

Word from the wise - Dolls point is ALWAYS carnage, even without Alex beach jumping his truck in short shorts...

We live in a big city, and the number of spots to kitesurf is very limited.
We all need to practice a lot of co-operation when we kite at Dolls, but it is not always carnage, I live there so I know.
NE and SE with an opposing tide, there is a lot more room, but we all need to make sure that we follow some basci sensible guidelines.

Avoid self launching or landing
Always launch on the water side. Keep it low and go!!
Always pat your head when you want someone to land your kite.
Never stand around on the sand with your kite overhead.
Never stand at the waters edge with your kite overhead.
No beach jumping.
Launch at the widest section of the beach.
Give way to people learning or lessons.
Dont come sreaming towards the beach to do tricks for the peanut gallery, 5M off the waters edge.
Avoid other water craft do not push right of way with any boats!!!
Roll up your lines as soon as you land your kite.
Keep noise to a minimum at the end of a session especially in front of the houses on Carruthers drive.
If there is any sort of incident involving the neighbours houses, cars, or persons, let Kitepower know asap.
If anyone needs a rescue let Kitepower know asap. (we have a boat)
(if you don't promise a case of cascade prem or hahn prem, we chum the water and leave you)
Look before you gybe/turn/jump!!!!
Always use a kite leash.
Upwind rider passes with their kite high, always, and don't cramp people passsing at speed.
Always be looking around you, for other kiters, boats, jetskis, gusts!!

Feel free to add to my list.

All good stuff, but it's because people DONT do these things that Dolls is such carnage.

So what are we to do? Most will listen but giving advise no matter how friendly frequently results in abuse (or worse!) - see what our local good samaritan Ian R cops for his good deeds!

Like it or not for the rest of us Dolls is the best place for lessons and/or learning on the south side of the bridge, so a certain amount of kook activity is to be expected though people not knowing any better.

And you forgot - look out for the swimmers who swim without fail in the only real piece of flat water on that side of the river...

IanR deserves a star! Sherriff of Dolls Point!
I flew at dolls on Friday, I had my flysurfer unrolled for about 2 seconds and he checked my identity! (Makin sure I wasn't the famous "Hazard" with the Flysurfer Speed).
Anyway, it's carnage in close on the flat(ish)water, but botany bay's a big place. One bloke on a Flexifoil Blade 3 rode just about to the other side of the Bay!
Anyway, Hi Ian, hope to catch up at Mambo, come n check out those local spots I showed you. And Alex, lookin forward to hookin up for a chat about BioDiesel.....I'll reserve judgement about whether you're a reckless daredevil hazard until then.

Ian R deserves a medal for what he does at Dolls and elsewhere in Botany Bay, if it were not for people like Ian we would have lost access already, please help him out in his mission to retain access for kiters on Botany Bay, speak to people who you see acting in poor judgement.

As for Alex, I am not raining on his parade, he can do whatever he wants, and he has helped a lot of people get into kiting for sure.

BUT he must respect locals, local rules, and the safety of others. He must see that his behaviour sets a poor example, everyone needs to tell him what is not cool in their area. Don't wait until there is an accident or a ban is slapped in place.

Steve, thanks for the response and all the info. It figures that a bloke who looked so competant on the water is connected to the industry in the manner of yourself.
You probably guessed from my post that I'm very safety orientated and keen to preserve kiting locations for the benefit of us that really enjoy the sport and will go the extra yard to ensure correct use of a location. Ive just recently returned to Australia after 3yrs in places far away and Ive seen plenty of good locations banned because of DOPES.
I'm also keen to meet up with Ian - it appears he also has the longevity of kiting in his sights.
I will call into see you at the shop to say G'day in next couple of weeks - Ive got to fly out of Sydney tomorrow - got an urgent job on in the States but should be back end November.
cheers for now and keep up the good work

Very good point about the swimmers, especially kids and people snorkelling.
Ian likes Cascade Premium!!

At the risk of a bit of abuse it is worth talking to anyone acting kooky. In my experience, despite the crap some cowards like to post on here from time to time, people rarely get abusive if you approach with genuine concern and a desire to help.

We all have to be prepared to speak up, thanks for your contribution Galah.

Strange, I do not remember seeing any caped crusaders at Botany last time I was there. What color tights does the superhero(Ian) wear and how does he keep the cape from tangeling around his line and bar?

Sure hope this wind lasts so I can get another session after work like yesterday. 30knots Yipee, can get some big air without having to work up the pop.

Went out last night.
there was a lull at 6:00 so just played in the waves at longreef going downwind. The wind was slightly offshore then so perfect for pulling back to the waveface. Then BAM the wind changes back on shore and im lofted onto the beach. pulled the saftey and was fine but that was if for the evening as gusts were reaching 40knots. I should have know something was up when there was not one other kiter or poley on the beach.

Im just back from the USA. Stacks of " BOW " kites over there. The Crossbow is seen probably at the rate of 4 to 1 , buts thats possibly because its been out longer. One interesting thing though. Whilst in Chicago had an interesting talk with Slingshot Bow riders who were bagging the slingy bow big time. Most of them said they preferred the characteristics of the Crossbow, especially its turning ability. Interesting comments also about " poor depower ability of Diesel.
Obviously everyone has their own opinions about what suits them but found it of interest anyway.
For my part I rode the XBow , Halo and Diesel. I definitely found the XBow more suited to my style and needs. Halo was good but not as happy on it as Xbow. Just couldn't find my " sweet " spot on the Slingshot. It felt a lot like a C kite but missing the good points of top Cs like the Ravens and Vegas. But again thats just me . Others may find the exact opposite - not bagging anything - just voicing an opinion.
Anyway its great to be back in OZ. Can't wait for some decent NE seabreeze to try out Dolls.

Very interesting comments on the Diesel kiterider, team riders bagging their own brand, I guess being a team rider has its advantages , but at times they have actually told me that they have to ride a specific kite even if they dont like it , just so the kite gets seen.

Maybe this is one of those occassions.Looks like our good mate has really caught an STD if you know what I mean.
