Hi All,

I have noticed a lot of people landing their kites at Dutchies by attaching their bars to the bollards at the base of the dunes and then flying thier kites down to sit on the sand, on edge, whilst they walk down and grab them.

This is a bloody stupid, dangerous and has the potential to do people and the bollards some real harm. There are always people about to land you kite and if not do a self land or worse case scenario drop it and wrap it in on one line. We do not need any further reasons for the rangers to pull the plug on our patch of sand so if you see anyone contemplating this genius behavior please word them up or even better catch their kite!!

Cheers

i was about to land a guy and he goes "NO!" so i say "dw i know what im doing" but he just walks by and ties the kite to the pole and does it that way...

stuff that when there other people to land my kite i take it although i did scare 2 guys when i did the 5th line self launch thing (would have looked like a kite was being blown away and some beginner about to hot launch) but i only do it because my dad is just dangerous when it comes to launching the kite

If its on a bow kite, then there shouldn't be an issue with this technique. With the kite max depowered it will sit at the edge of the window on the sand with very little pull and wait to be landed.

I used to have a Switchblade, and when trying to land the kite without assistance at St Kilda beach (last to leave, etc). This was a great method to land the kite. Depower completely, land the kite, attach to the bin pole, and walk over to your kite sitting/standing on the beach. The kite is completely depowered.

I understand the danger if your kite is powered up doing this, reasons for rangers to ban kiting at that spot, especially when it all goes wrong and an accident occurs.

So its safe on bows???? What happens if theres a change in wind velocity???? doesnt your wind windows edge change...
an invert/twist is scary when youve actually got control of the thing

"accidents" are unforseen unexpected events. Negligence is that what this will be in a courts/councils eyes

A change in wind direction is likely to have an impact on anything and everything you do, including dragging kiters over land causing bans.

Incidentally a change in wind direction with the method discussed means the kite will automatically move to a point in the wind where it settles again. Being at max depower the kite will move to the edge of the window with minimal pull on the lines as well. I know it seems hard to believe but when you see how it works with most bow/sle's it does work surprisingly well, and I was a little surprised myself.

That said, I see a lot of people self launching or landing when there are people around. I don't see the point if there are people capable of launching or landing you, it should be a technique reserved for specific conditions where there are no alternatives.

I'm not worried about the kiters, but what if some little kid, dog or even adult accidentally trips over your lines using this method???? Or a kiter looses control and gets dragged through your lines?

It's a sure way to get people banned and see yourself getting sued if you use this method - it takes just one accident!

Hi guys,

I think this is a pretty dumb way to self land in general when there are other safer ways to land on your own, I'm sure the novelty is appealing but if there are other people around to land your kite, then take advantage of their help as it is a lot more fool proof, not perfect either but a lot better.

If no one is around and the beach is clear it may be OK, but personally I would still prefer more traditional methods, like letting go of the bar, letting the kite crash down on the adge of the wind window, walking upwind a bit and then pulling the front safety line to drop the canopy to the beach. This method works just about everytime for me and if it does go wrong, at least the kite is flagged on the safety leash and can do no harm.

It's time to be a bit more responsible. If a newbie with a "C" kite sees this method and decides to try it for themselves you could inadvertently and indirectly be the cause of a ban.

Play it safe people, especially with the beaches being so Christmas crowded.

Good winds,
