No prize Collinwill78, flown one they do not auto zenith.
Kites must tuned to be able to get some tension on the rear lines or you cannot steer them.
However, it is possible to let a Venom fly from its front lines and it will fly at zenith with absolutely no input for hours on end, no LF kite will do that, no inflato will for that matter either.
If the school was IKO, NISLO, then they should have run you through rigging it until you knew it. If they did not, you did not get an IKO lesson, you got something else, and it was incomplete and you got short changed.
If you let go of the bar for long enough the kite would definitely fall to the ground, maybe even loop on the way, sounds like you had it leashed suicide style? Was the leash connected to the fifth line or the chicken loop?

o.k. steve PAY UP!!!
jokes aside,
the back lines usually have a bit of tension but depending on the brand and the users set up the tension can vary enourmously.
I had a 17m LF spectrum 2 which had very slack back lines (but it was a piece of crap anyway)
no inflatable C - kite should continue to fly when the bar is released... but some bows/sle/hybrids are quite stable and take their time to come down, albeit with no po or very little power.
