Hey,

First post in here. Great site!

I've got myself an 07 12m LF Havoc. It's my first kite and got it for a great price. Now I've had a lesson with an IKO registered company on the coast. We got into the flying the kite side of things and what not, but they didn't really touch on actually rigging up the kite.

Long story short, After my lesson I took the kite out with the help of my old man and figured out what goes where and got it flying which was f***en awesome. I noticed that my rear lines were a bit slack when I was flying and when I let go of the bar (leashed from the chicken loop to my waist harness) the kite didn't oversheet(?) and kept flying which isn't] what I had expected it to do. When we did that during the lesson the kite would just fall to the ground.

I guess that having the rear lines a little slack was the reason behind the sluggish response I was gettign too. Are the rear lines supposed to be a little slack and by letting the bar go, should the kite not fall to the ground?

sounds like we found our auto zennith inflato!!!
o.k. steve PAY UP!!!

jokes aside,
the back lines usually have a bit of tension but depending on the brand and the users set up the tension can vary enourmously.
I had a 17m LF spectrum 2 which had very slack back lines (but it was a piece of crap anyway)

no inflatable C - kite should continue to fly when the bar is released... but some bows/sle/hybrids are quite stable and take their time to come down, albeit with no po or very little power.

nislo, does your kite have a 5th line?

Hi
Noticed that you are from the gold coast, you should check out the local club www.seqka.com . A good way to met and get to know the local people and they will be more then happy to help you out with any questions you have. If you are having trouble with the tuning of you kite feel free to look me up, just ask at your local spot for paul jackson and they should point you in the right direction. More than happy to tune it for you. I will be in the broadwater the next two days in the mornings.

Cheers Paul Jackson

No prize Collinwill78, flown one they do not auto zenith.

Kites must tuned to be able to get some tension on the rear lines or you cannot steer them.

However, it is possible to let a Venom fly from its front lines and it will fly at zenith with absolutely no input for hours on end, no LF kite will do that, no inflato will for that matter either.

If the school was IKO, NISLO, then they should have run you through rigging it until you knew it. If they did not, you did not get an IKO lesson, you got something else, and it was incomplete and you got short changed.

If you let go of the bar for long enough the kite would definitely fall to the ground, maybe even loop on the way, sounds like you had it leashed suicide style? Was the leash connected to the fifth line or the chicken loop?

LF kites are supposed to come with an instructional dvd that explains the setup procedure. Go back and get one. While you're there, ask for the set-up lesson that you should get when purchasing a kite.

@Angie Pangie - I'll do that for sure. With the perfect surf we've been getting though, I don;t think it will be this weekeend

@Kitepower - I don't want to mention company names, but the place I bought the kite from (also gave me the free group lesson) is purported to be the only IKO registered company on the GC? I'll have to get back to them and get some more info! And I had my leash hooked upto the chicken loop from my harness. Thats how we had it setup during our lesson.

@bigwavedave - That's interesting to know! I'll have to track one down. ANd get the lesson

Perhaps I didn't give it long enough to drop down? When I did let go it dropped a little, but it looked like it was going to fall staright into the power zone, so me being the wous, pulled the quick release on my leash.

For everyones clarification, it wasn't Paul's store that I went to. It was the other IKO school

Just see Paul for future lessons, problem solved.
Pretty certain Paul would include rigging in any begginer lessons.

Do not clip the leash to the chicken loop, the kite will not properly depower that way, either clip it to the 5th line (which might be attached with velcro or a ring to the Chicken Loop, or to a flagging ring on one of the flying lines.
If you are not sure about what I am saying see an experienced rider or Paul before you fly the kite again, it could save you life or prevent serious injury.
