Excessively gusty winds are a significant hazard to kiteboarders. Such unstable winds can come from a variety of sources in different parts of the world. Some are fairly widespread, like cold fronts and tropical systems and others like unstable wind generated by headlands (rotor), thermal winds, etc.. can be more local in nature. You have all of these sources of unstable weather and more in Australia I believe. Some articles on weather that kiteboarders should carefully read over and think about appear below:

I like the story with the "boosting big".

Thanks guys. Please check it out and think it over; I've been using this stuff for several years with some success. It isn't perfect but beats just "goin when it's blow'n." That seems to work for windsurfing (not lightning) but for kiteboarding it will get ugly at times as quite a few of us have learned.

Best wishes to all in the north coping with all these frequent cyclones. I hope your storm season ends fast! Been there and have done that in recent years and it's no fun. A few articles came out of that experience, hurricanes and kiteboarding, including:

Hurricane Katrina ... A Sea Story, A Submarine And A MOVIE PREMIER!

... and a modified collection of ideas for weather planning and monitoring around tropical systems and cyclones (WARNING: this is far from perfect and the hazard level can go way up. Some of the problems are illustrated in the following account)

Good luck guys,
