I've heard of Sandy Bay, but then again all the bays are sandy

From what I can see there are 50 km of yummy spots.

Counting the sleeps. Please don't use up all the wind before I get there

i'll be able to tell you mid october, though I dont think that will be too much help, apparently a 4wd is the only way to go for the good stuff but there is a spot on the west side of the peninsula ("graveyards"-"gravestones" maybe?) that is pretty good...good luck, and post up the spots you find when you find them because they might actually help me.

I was up there for a couple of weeks in early July. Unfortunately for me I copped the best fortnight of "perfect" weather they'd had this year. We managed to catch some fish...... ( yay ). Sandy Bay looked awesome for flat water stuff but I'm pretty sure Graveyards was the spot for some surf. There'll be some better planning next year.

Gravestones, Graveyards I think you all mean Tombstones thats waay south of ol' no wind Exmouth.
Great flat water, forgiving reef, gentle waves and all you have to do is turn off at sunny Carnarvon.
Move along folks theres nothing to see here....

Be careful of roo's on the way up, don't drive at night, everything is expensive and pack everything because we are in for 9 months of pure kite heaven on turquoise water.
See y'all when you get here.

especially from overlander roadhouse north
roos, goats, sheep, cattle, emus, foxes etc
luckily for us stayed on side of road, however plenty of road kill to view including a cow/bull

we drove at night on way up (2-3am thru that stretch) but late arvo/ eveing back and plenty seen then

Relax,
gasman commeth

funnilly enough, just saw Felix in Sumbawa. Sorry Felix, you left just as the wind kicked in. Likewise, I'll be in Exe 1/10 staying at the Lighthouse for a week, Via Gnaralooooooo

BTW, any of you offered the choice between Sumbawa and sex, take Sumbawa. Way better. Fortunately there is always Bali on the way back if you know what I mean.

But to the point ........ Lurch baby, Gruz, Relo .... get the troops mustered for some serious mischief. Yeah Baby!

JJD....all I can say is that I feel sorry for you natural footers!

Jkeys won the 'Clinic Award' by getting smashed in the bommie and having his kite recovered by a jetski...had the whole 3mile camp watching.

Go hard or Go home. Super dangerous graveyards 4-6ft, side off shore, 25knots to 30knots and gusty, super shallow, not the place for gun-ho kite loops on the in side, as I found out. Kite got exploded over by back wash and went over falls on 6ft wave, my S/Steel harness loop was straightened by the force as it was ripped off my body. Next stop indonesia. My kite ended up 3-4 km offshore. But the Aussie and I got more than our fill. BEWARE, not for the faint hearted at 4-8ft. In-experienced kiters WILL die out there.

Nothing like backhand on a 8 footer on a surfboard. Blows away any thing else I've tried in kiting.

Howdy all
Just got back from sunny Shark Bay with no wind thanks to the trough that came thru. Had a kite with a few local crew this arvo and a bit of a yak afterwards.
It sounds like theres gonna be a fair few crew up here in the next few months and it seems that we have to lay down a few ground rules.
Th locals were concerned that someone kited the most popular snorkel site on Ningaloo Marine Park, Turquoise Bay, frikken beautiful but full of Euro's trying not to drown while checking the coral.
The management plan for the area has targeted kiting as a visitor risk management (VRM) issue, this means that we, as kiters have been targeted as a potential liability. We don't need this or want it, but like everywhere else on our coast people are talking about the potential to kill ourselves or someone else and then putting bans into place.
This place is large, remote and stunningly beautiful. If your coming up dont kite in the popular touro places. There is every possible combination of kiting imaginable here, with some of the most beautiful scenery in the world (whales were going off this arvo!!).
Go find 'em and avoid popular areas otherwise we will end up with signs telling us where we can and can't go.
Respect what we have and have a great trip.
Cheers

Hi Ian
Point taken about not squashing the snorklers. Sandy Bay is much better for kiting anyway.
I am checking in at the Lighthouse on Sunday 1 October. Just had a look at the tides ........ basically low tides getting worse through the week in the afternoon. Bugga.
My feeling is that at least a mid tide would be best for a down winder, given the amount of shallow reef inside the main break (compared to the friendly sea grass of Shark Bay).
So I would have thought Monday 2 as first option, then Tuesday 3. How does this work with others? Or do you have some extra insight now you're a local?

Hey Bruce
I'm as local as you are up here, just trying to get across the concerns of the real locals up here. The threads say that theres gonna be a ****e load of people kiting here for the next few months and if someone takes off the head of snorkelling euro, then we're all in trouble.
Haven't checked the tides, but will in the next few days, if Tuesday looks good, lets gooooo.
See you at the Lighthouse.
Regards
Ian

Fellas, I'll be up on Monday. Tuesday sounds a bit early for me, but if it must be then, so be it. Let there be good wind and enough water, can't wait.

The holiday is finally coming, yay!

Nick, likewise I would rather chill, then do a downwinder later in the week ... hence the issue of the tide. We need an injection of local knowledge here. I have sailed enough along the Exe coast to know that inside the reef you can have some serious issues with very shallow coral including STAGHORN, which is really bad up your arse. I suspect there are some sections of 10 km where tide is no issue. It's just that we need at least 20 km like last year. Maybe Yardie to Turquoise? Another possibility is to disregard the tide, and do the down winder outside the reef, making it a wave event. But likewise I can tell you that the wave break on the reef deserves a great deal of respect.

In any event, I look forward to getting some kiters out on the reef break opposite the LIGHTHOUSE. Last year I was sailing with whales comming through as I tacked in and out. They also tracked a Great White that came accross from South Africa for the Humpback migration, just in time for my trip###%&#@## Missed me you b^stard.

gday guys, not wanting to state the obvious or stand on any toes, but i would strongly suggest studying a decent marine chart of the cape before your downwinder. it will give an idea of where those bastard bombies and unexpected reef are.
they sell em at bluewater tackle in town, cost bugger all if a few of you chuck in

enjoy

Hi guys,

We spent a week or so up there last year and pretty much kited the surf at Graveyards, it's a killer spot, sand covered reef, shallow and some smooth bits on the inside between the waves.

I cant imagine the stupidity of anyone trying kiting Turquoise Bay, a big no no. Sounds like a serious case of "Look at me, Look at me"

The bombie off the lighthouse and a tad further upwind would be great, but make sure nothing goes wrong, not a lotta help out there and very big bitey fishies.[}:)]

Have fun you guys, wish I was going too. Some idiot thought it would be a great idea to upgrade the school this year which left me with no time, no money and no alternatives this year

Good winds,

I'm in exmouth ATM 18-23 Kts SW winds no-one kitesurfing trying to locate locals but is hard. Tourist bureau is useless for kitesurfing info.
Everyone i ask either doesn't know what it is or don't know where they do it.

Went from Yardie Creek back to Exmouth Approx 90kms with a strong 23Knt breeze not one kitesurfer or pole dancer.

Most of the bays are flat water but a lot of reef and bombies tide is very low In the afternoon so reefs are very shallow so I am very hesitant kiting when there is no one around without local knowledge.

SE wind in the morning is good at town beach but is only 10kts so not worth my time with only a 10 and 14 metre.
