I have the opportunity to go to Port Douglas now. I have kited there for many years in Sept but not, now, with the stingers.

Can anyone tell me if stinger suits work (where do I get one)? What about your face and hands? Are there millions of the blighters or just the odd one? Is this a viable kiting destination at this time?

Experienced views appreciated.

Cheers

From what I understand stinger season should end in april anyway so you should be fine.

You can kite all year round up here.... They're not in plague proportions - you'd be lucky to see one.
The stinger season is at the very end right now - some of the locals wear no stinger gear even in the middle of summer!
I'd recommend a stinger suit if you've got one - other wise a light wetty works just fine.
As for the hands, feet and face - some wear gloves, booties and hoods if they're really paranoid.
Use the golden rule and have a chat to the locals when you get there, see what they're wearing..... and watch out for crocs ;)

stinger season is officially november to may but stingers can be present all year round but to be honest there havent been many around the whole season and personally wouldnt bother using a stinger suit but its best to ask the locals when you get there

Stinger suits are great to have just in case. There always is a chance you'll cop a boxy, especially between November and May, and for the sake of looking like a kook, versus the one in a million chance of being in excruciating pain and scarred for life or possibly dead, it's well worth wearing one.
The other great advantage of a stinger suit is that it's great sun protection and nowhere near as hot as a wettie, which you will suffer in even in Autumn.
I still have one in decent condition here in Melbourne if you want to borrow it before you go.

I see that most of the people replying to this topic are from victoria, and considering that you want to go kiting in the tropics, they are certainly the opinions that one would want to rely on. Get on the phone, call some of the local dealers and see what they have to say. Call a long lost friend, that may be living up here, then again you can always put a few extra $$$ in your pocket an "suck it and see!!!" when you get get there, life can be pretty rewarding to the adventurous especially when you have a better picture.
Just remember you're dealing with "Mother Nature" and there are no guarantees!

Thanks Guys.

I am checking flights and wind for the weekend.

I am old enough not to care about looking like a kook so I will get one from somewhere.

many thanks

nige.

Cairns locals are not wearing suits anymore. The wind is looking very good for the weekend. Hopefully you have a good, windy trip.

Listen to Boxburg he lived up here for donkeys balls. Used to see him out on his skimmer in the height of the stinger season.

All booked Wind forecast looks fantastic

Going to be there at 4 mile Fri, Sat, Sun, Mon. with my Takoon Furias (Blue Black Green).

Say hello if you see me.

I know Bretto. he taught me in 04! and I have done the 20k 4Mile beach to Low Isles trip with him which was unforgettable if not tiring.

Thanks all for the tips. This is exactly what makes these forum thingies great

Very generous of you and thanks for the advice. It will be probably easier for all if I buy one there. Do you know which dive company is best? They are about $60 right?

i wore a short arm steamer there last week - wasn't too hot in the water with it on. about half the guys had suits or wetsuits other half boardies or vests and one chick was wearing a 2 piece bikini. so its a 50/50 guess at the moment.

one thing you do need at 4 mile is a cold 6 pack to share round in the arvo,as its a bit of a ritual with Rich and co up there after a long day.

Hi Chronic

No problems with 6 pack.

I know Rich a little. He lent me his 16/18 mtr vegas once on an un-kite-able day up there a few years ago. I got it all wet for him!
