I recently spent 10 days over in Fiji. I really struggled to find anywhere with no coral, a decent beach and most importantly some waves.

Fussy I know.

There must be somewhere. I heard Singatoka on the south of the main island was a possibility but the locals had decided to stop any easy access to the beach, as the resort was not paying the locals enough rent.

Anyone know anywhere, maybe on the Islands?

We are going to nananu i ra also arrive on the 18th very excited

I have never been before so can't say what it will be like, I know people that hae been there windsurfing before and they said it was awsome but quite a bit of coral but they windsurf on a different beach to the kiter's.

We are going with Go Windsurfing and they are meant to take us to the best spot for the wind each day Are you going with are organised thing or by yourselves?

I'm looking forward to Fiji no matter what the wind does as I have never been before and could use the holiday but a few knots of wind would make it perfect.

It is currently predicting 3-7km/h for next week which is 1.5 - 4 knots which will be perfect for snorkling and seeing all those fishies but there will probably be some wind somewhere...

Haven't started packing yet, I figure we wont need much after we get the gear sorted, some shorts and t-shirts should do it so hopefully the weight witht he airlines wont be to much of an issue.

Yes I guess we should be locking our bags, hadn't even thought of that but we don't want anything 'appearing' in there!

Maybe some combination locks, I dont like the ones with keys as I tend to lose the keys

We have just come back from Nananu i ra (north of main island). Take Booties. Coral everywhere, be careful.

Flat water only at Nananu i ra, bit of a nighmare to launch your kite as the beach is thin at low tide and almost non existant at high tide, with palm trees over hanging.

We went south of the main island to try to check out Singatoka which we were told was without coral and may have some waves, but as I said at the top of this forum the locals had decided to block access to the beach.

It appeared windier in the south of the main island with wind everyday (4 days), in the north it was windy 3 out of 5 days (12m and 16m).

The Fijian's are really nice people, but the place is not cheap, if you are expecting Asian prices you will be wrong and very poor. Once you are on the Islands, they really have got you over a barrel.

If you are on a budget and want to avoid the $90 Fijian taxi from the airport to Nananu i ra, go on the Express bus from the airport. It's almost as quick as a taxi, about 3 hours as oppossed to 2 2 1/2. It costs about $10 Fijian. I carried 3 kites and a board with no problems.

The thing that does take the mickey, is the cost for the boat from the mainland to Nananu i ra Island, run by the resorts. Our resort charged $25 Fijian each for 10 minute return boat ride.

If you find a place to kite with waves and no foot shredding coral please let me know.

No what you mean - my weakness is V and I bought the last one on nananu i ra when I was there a couple of weeks ago (insisted on buying the 'display' one that was six months out of date and tasted a bit odd!) They might have restocked but no Red Bull so I would take supplies.

To be quite honest, Fiji is not a reliable easy destination. If you want to see Fiji and secondarily get a kite in, go for it.

I sailed for 3 weeks last year through the Yasawas and I can tell you, I didn't find one spot to kite that offered easy access to quality sailing. Sure, I had some great sails........

like launching from the yacht mid channel getting tossed around like an olive in a martini mixer, then sailing accross open ocean with huge schools of tuna attacking bait fish around me, dropping in on tiny isolated reefs and getting wipped out as the swell meets in the middle coming from all 4 directions at once. Oh, and sitting in 2000m deep water all alone starring down into the pretty blue when the wind dropped from 25kn to zero.....

like wonderful high wind sailing at Blue Lagoon after surviving THE most dangerous launch on a razor thin beach with trees and coral ....... you get the idea.

So why am I going to Fiji tomorrow???
Because I want to torment myself some more. And I love raw tuna, I'm sick of winter already, and because life is short. And you can laugh your tits off at me, because I'm paying a fortune to go to NAMOTU IS, potentially the best place in Fiji ......... and the forecast is SH!T
