Hey,

Mate and I did our first downwinder today and I was wondering about some 'downwind technique'. I've done a bit of a search, which indicated some methods, butI found that I needed to still 'edge' my board to get tension on the lines and I had to keep on 'sining' my kite to get power out of it. Wind meter @ nobby's was 18-20, though when we stopped half way it was more like 12 - so perhaps that had something to do with our difficulties.

Also on-topic for the locals - anyone that does this regularirly, do you stay close to shore or tack out into deeper water. We noticed the wind really die off close to shore but didn't want to venture out too far in case it completely died.

Thanks for any help.

Craig.

G'day Craig

i've done it a few times now .That was also my experience on a few of the runs .lousy wind close to shore cranking out the back.Once you get the end the wind will also be more onshore which if there is no wind means you might be walking.

I have been doing a few runs from the hospital at Stockton down to the breakwall.Thhis is a much better option .The wind has gotta be the most reliable in Newcastle and the ride is excellent. Also you can do a few tacks up the length of the breakwall to the old shipwreck and then its one tack across the bay back to the hospital and you can do it again.

Cheers
