I've experimented with a few setups, but I'm yet to land the monster tuna or salmon. Due to an upcoming trip to warm, bountiful waters I'm experimenting with new rigs.

Has anyone else got any rigs they've tried, or managed to catch a fish with?

I've got a quick release off the back of the harness to a very long leader with lure.

I remember seeing a photo of a guy with an Albacore or similar in a mag that he'd caught whilst kiting. He's my hero.

Other methods (without lure) have involved bodily throwing myself upon fishy creatures other than stingrays and weird looking ****, although totally hilarious its generally not very effective.

Warning! only go fishing in sub 18knots, on a semi powered setup, no one around, wearing safety goggles, shark repellent, epirb, flares, and all wrapped in cotton wool. Fishing hooks can be nasty.

just dont stop if you hook up, tuna swim in circles once hooked and it could tangle you up.would be a darwin award for sure.
albacore are a deep swimming tuna so you will have to use a paravain to get the skirt down there but other toothy critters will have a go.
i`m originaly from tassie and you`ll get hits from barracouta with hardly any effort at all.
i`d use 400lb jenki trace so you can see it easy and a quick release for sure.
let me know how you go you crazy bastard.

Just remember to burlie the water up really well first with heaps of cow blood.
Attracts predatorial fish for miles.
And look out for the sandgropers

Yeah couta have been after it before and barrel pike. You just have to make big long turns, and keep your speed under control and remember what you're doing... yeah and if you hook up keep moving or bustout. Somehow I don't think i'll being going 6 miles out for a tuna thou!

The windsurfers use rods on the back of their boards and have events and all in Maui.

You are combining two age old techniques - one common, the other, not so well known. Most people fish from boats. Some people have been known to fish with kites - the Maori, for instance, stood on the beach and flew their bait out to sea.

In both cases, fisherman and fish are separated, the first by a boat, the second by a beach.

Your scenario transcends this separation. It's very zen. Man and fish become one. It's worth giving the man/fish dualism a bit of thought though. Especially in the south.

lol

I like that manfish zen idea, never thought of it like that... it's all getting a bit "goony goo goo" if you go as far back as Eddie Murphys Delirious.

"I have heard of" someone kiting at the same beach his mates were fishing, and on one tack he ferried one mate's lure out to a channel beyond casting range, dropped it off and kited off out of the way.

Ive tried it before with a similar set up that you describe. Caught nothing and had trouble keeping the lure in the water. I think you might have to rig a handline so you can let out enough line to stop the lure bouncing out of the water.

If you had a longer leader, like 20m youd have trouble getting off the beach without snagging the lure or getting a tangle in the line.

Good luck with it.

Im sure it can be done as Ive got mates in South Oz who have caught salmon with a lure off the back of a surfboard.

About three years ago, I kited over a large school of australian salmon, and felt a bump. I tacked back, and found a good size fish floating upside down. He must have put his head up at the wrong time. I stopped, picked him up be the tail and sailed into the shore and gave it to a fisherman there. He was impressed.

Maybe you should mount a minature baseball bat under your board, and give up on this hook business!

a mate of mine had a set up very similar that worked for him off of a surf ski
he just had a really big float set up to a velcro quick release then when the fish struck he'd release the velcro and follow the float like on jaws

When I have fish and chips, man and fish become one and that's very zen. So much so that I like to fall asleep on the couch if I ate a lot :P

Or... you could strap gelignite to the bottom of your board, rigged up with a hand-grenade style detonator and QR. When you find the fish, send your kite, pop the board, and pull the pin. KAAAAAFUGGGINBOOOOOOM!!! Set your kite for the landing, a nice little transition move, and you scoot back and pick up the fish. Simplicity! Huh?

and never ever try it after dark because night kiting is very very dangerous

You might be onto something here, the added boost would be insane but your sure to go through a few boards, feet and legs getting it sorted

This is a really good light bulb.
I think it has legs.
How about adding a fish finder, don’t forget a knife. Might as well gut the fish and scale it less weight to take back to shore, and good for inviting other fish around.

just remember the professor said it’s your life and you can waste it however you like. Happy fishing buddy.

Me I’m going to bring illegal immigrants in on my kite and run drugs.

some of this is becoming hard to decipher. Generally a 30m leader coiled or run out along the beach, kite already up, and off you go. Mind you down here I'm on my own most of the time, it's just experimenting with no-one else around.

I thought more guys would've been into it or tried it at least, anyway I'll post pics when and if I drag dinner to shore!

another good tip would be to trail 2 frozen thawing chickens by steel rope to your harness as berley
