Flat water kiting close to Tweed heads ?

Hey all,
I'm looking for flat water to kite on and Currumbin / Southport are a long way from Brunz.
On google you can see some fresh water lakes and dams to the west a bit like Advance town(Hinze?), Clarrie Hall Dam and Whian Whian - all again a bit too far but interesting all the same, and then closer the mark,

Cobaki broadwater,
Terranorra broadwater
Cabarita lake

Tweed River
Brunswick River has some great expanse of water, Marshalls Creek being one but (only on high tide).
& a bit further afield, Ballina River..

I've looked at Caba lake and couldn't see a launch site unless you launch off the water.
Marshalls creek is much the same situation at high tide - at low tide there are lots of oyster clad rocks and mangrove sprouts in the sand....
maybe it can be done?

Does anybody know of kosher kite surfing/ launch sites at any of these venues?
Or has anyone safely kited these areas?

Hey there. I asked the same question when I started kiting. (I lived in caba and now live near pottsville.)

Believe it or not, all the places you have listed are actually pretty unsuitable and almost impossible to ever catch working. Anything just off the coast around here has hills up wind or onshore wind coming over dunes and trees and small rises making the wind really crap. Southport is fine if you want to drive that far. You'll probably want to be on top of your game and comfy in crowds if you head to currumbin when its windy.

I would suggest checking north wall in southerlies since u r at brunz and using the small area of flat water the river wall shelters. If you've been kiting a while and know the conditions / are with a mate, its not hard to kite there from the surf club then come back up wind when you are done. DO NOT go in the river mouth though, water runs very fast at times and the walls are high on both sides effecting wind heaps.

Sorry, but not much flat water available around here. Plenty of surf though.. Today was awesome.

Thanks m8, I'll have to get good at the waves then. Nth wall's a good suggestion, plenty of flat water there for sure. It does get a little off shore in the southerlies so I'll wait for a more easter to have a crack there.

Surfed with Rev 08 11m mostly trimmed down today. Had heaps o' fun, of course

but waves are winning so far. I'm getting a directional next week, maybe that'll make life easier?

Good call on Currumbin, I'll leave it for coached sessions, I'm in my first season.

If you don't mind me asking, what size kite did you have out today?
A mate told me he took his 6m Cab SB out at sunnie coast and was fighting it!

yeah around here sunday was pretty wild on any size if it is your first season. pretty unsafe i think. 20 to 30 se to ssw in messy surf with a bit of swell around. Def sick with mates in those conditions. Try not to go by what size kits others are using. There are just way too many variables more important than that on hectic days in the surf.

Yeah, waves will be fun in no time. As for the directional, some like them heaps. Its all too complex for me. Surfboard works in everything, (especially surf) and twin tip works in everything.

Cool Greg thanks heaps, I definitely prefer kiting with mates but I don't know too many kiters round here. Hopefully somebody will be out there now, it's looking good! - The benefits of being self employed!
20-25 kts is the call on the charts. yeeewwww! Look forward to seeing you out there m8- Johnny

ahhh, yeah, thanks for that Benny. Did u see my high speed down wind body drag?? I know you've had a fair bit of practice but i'm pretty fast hey.?

Thanks for the tip m8, Checked that spot and it is good on a SouEaster, would be a great launch for a downwinder to blackrock or Sth Golden or wherever really. I was there for ages. It's defo the best learner spot around here. Thanks m8.
