i am on flinders at the moament and was wondering if anyone else had ever kited here. i grew up here and get back about once a year to see whats going on. i have recently learnt to kite so brought my gear over this time. if you are curious flinders is off the east coast of tas.

there are a few good spots to kite depending on what you want to do as i am just learning i go to whitemark which has a large aria of flat shallow water or lillys bit deeper and choppier both on the east coast or if you are clever enought you have the noreth east river where you can get some pritty good surf most of the east coast has surf and is one big beach. there are some places around the islands that would be quite incredible in the right winds most of the islands have space to launch. surf over sand bars so you have flat water infront and behind the waves and places where you get a steep swell without the waves breaking. the bigest problem is that the wind can get quite gusty. i went out yesterday and the wind was going between 15 to high 20s but i suppose dealing with that comes with a bit of pratice i only have a 12 m kite so it gets a bit scary whaen it gets up near 30kn. the windsurfers seem to handle the conditions a bit better.

i have 2 mates that live here who windsurf as far as i know the 3 of us are the only ones that do wind sports. there are a few dudes that surf and that is all.

never seen a post on flinders so you have one now. has anyone got any tips on gear that can handle higher winds and good in gusts? i am thinking of geting a 9m so i have a bit more range.

anyway take it easy all

chris

Hey there,

I kited Flinders a few years ago. I have used a ILE Wipika 3.0 in 35+ knots (I even managed to get some big jumps in, but the kite was moving so fast I quickly got tired) and a wipika 6.5, an RRD 9, an Airrush Lift 10 and slingshot fuel 13. The Fuel was by the far the safest in the gusty Bass Strait conditions and it had the best wind range. I would be tempted to get a bow kite to have the added depower safety.

I kited on the east coast just off Partiarchs Inlet. The ideal run would be to kite the full length of the beach from Patriarch's to NE river mouth (or vice versa if the wind dictates), provided you have someone to pick you up at the other end. The beach is wide and 24km or so long so it would be an amazing run. I have also kited in front of the Golf Club at Whitemark, the wind can be a bit onshore there, but on the right day it would be great. I have been tempted to try further south on the north side of Trousers point but never got there. Might be worth a look. Similarly Castle rock beach could be worth a try depending on wind direction.

The breeze can come in just right in January when I am usually there, but I have no idea what the wind is gunna do at this flukey time of year! It will surely blow!
Good luck
Steve
