Anybody know if you can kite at Fraser Island? Looking at going end of July and want to know if it's worth taking my gear....

If not, know of any other resort style islands - not Cairns or Pt.Douglas as I'm going there before hand.

Thanks!

take the scenic flight off the beach on fraser island and play count the sharks..

youll be thinking, that its not possible to spot so many, they must be rocks/seaweed or something. and then they move :)

You can definately kite there in the ocean on the eastern side - it's pretty wild though and don't go anywhere near the northern end - there is the end of a huge shelf there and there are some huge fish in abundance there. Not too sure about the wind in July - I know we kited a fair bit in winter last year on the Sunshine Coast which is about 100km's south of Fraser.

Watch our for fisherman 4WD's and planes landing on the beach.

I can 2nd that comment about the sharks. I went to fraser... they said "don't swim in the ocean". I thought "****! who do they take me for? some japaneese tourist????".

Then I went for small aircraft joy flight. Just past the break there were so many 5foot plus sharks that my wife though it was weed or an illusion, until the pilot corrected her.

Mate I grew up Near rainbow beach and over the last 20 years I've seen some very large grey torpedoes caught on both sides of fraser Island , but as is any where you kite if you actually flew over most popular spots you'll normally see a couple of noah,s[}:)]. Look at Tannum Sands and Mackay they got shark baits 200 m of the main beach's but we still kite there. Then you got the kiters in darwin that have too watch out for snapping handbags as well, I reckon the sesh you pass up is the one you'll never get, and the wind is always perfect when you don't have your gear.

I've got a storey for you Crack.
I grew up around that area as a you fella, Take you're gear and use it with caution. As a 12 year old boy my mate and i took a 100mtr swim into shore from a boat we were fishing from. As we approached shallow water we stood up and got the shock of our lives. A shark much much bigger than us was following us in for i don't know what. It took me 20 years and a kick ass sport to get me back in the water. I'd give it a miss, but try Hervey Bay, that could be a hidden gem.
It's always worth taken you'r gear.

Lots of sharks at fraser island, take your gear but be very careful.
Just don't bodydrag for too long and everything should be sweet.
Have fun and stay on your board you'll be fine.

Cheers Tony

dude, wont kite there if it was the last place on earth with wind.
Heaps of safer places near by with better conditions.
I grew up around there and was in the local fishing clubs and comps,we have had sharks beaching them selfves trying to get to the bait eskie sitting in 1 inch of water as the waves wash up
you r mad if you kite in those waters, too many feeding frenzies for my likeing.
or maybe i have a secrete spot there that totally rocks that i want no one to no about
now i got you thinking

yeah i reckon you could kite on the lakes there, so long as the wind was clean and from the right direction.

wind would never be clean... too many hills inbetween the lakes. And there are a LOT of sharks on the coast... here is a photo of one I took a few weeks ago... www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=4173

I used to windsurf (pre-kiting) regularly a few years ago between Inskip point and Fraser Island. Fraser Island and Double Island Pt are much windier than other spots and the out-going tide was a big bonus although you had to make sure you could get home.

Lots of dugong and sea tortises. I didn't see sharks except once something huge surfaced behind me, I think it was a baby humpback.
The biggest worry about biting things were the bloody March Flies, they would chase me over the water!

I'd love to go kiting there now, it is definitely windier there than the Sunshine Coast because it sticks out more.

I was kiting at Fraser between Christmas and New Year just been, at waddy point. An excellent spot for the prevailing south easters at that time of year creating a nice cross shore breeze with long flat water gutters and relatively clean waves beyond them. I would have spent maybe 4-5 hours kiting in that time and thank God I never saw a shark (I do need glasses though). Definitely take your gear, you’ll kick yourself if you don’t and its perfect.

Anything from N to SE works at various locations in the 'Bay. There's a number of places to stay, all along the esplanade. There's a brand new Peppers Resort right across the road from the pier these days!

I'm living in Bundaberg these days, kiting at Elliott Heads, so I'm spoiled now I'm sure the 'Bay guys will agree that it's a much nicer spot up here. Extra ~120kms to drive, but thoroughly worth it IMHO. There's a caravan park at Elliott where you can just walk across the carpark to the beach.....throw up your tent for the weekend and you're set.

Just have to pray for some more SE winds.....we've had nothing decent since just after Easter

There's a small group of (semi)regular kiters here (Elliott). Having said that though, sometimes my GF and I can be the only ones on the water....got this whole awesome spot to ourselves

I've only ever seen smallish bullies, mostly out the front of the mouth itself on the changing tide, but I *have* seen a couple further down the river. 99% of the time they're gone before you can be sure you've seen them, but I *did* run over something awfully big the other day, over the Coonaar side and out the front. No idea what it was (general consensus on here was that it was probably a large 'ray), but I got the fk out of there pretty quickly regardless
