The easiest deffinition I can give, is that, NEW SCHOOL freestyle is still unhooked however, involves sending the kite to get maximum air. Good example of New school is Ruben Lenten, he using the kties power to get insaine air, but then still does unhooked tricks like pullups and grabs ect. Some of the classic tricks are still considered new school, eveyone still apreciates the double or tripple backroll, however, board off's are long gone. WAKESTYLE is as what is the name indicates, as a style as simular to wakeboarding as possible. Thus, the kite is expected to be as low as possible, to simulate the smaller horizontally fast jumps. This emulation of wakeboarding means that all tricks preformed are simular to wakeboarding, and jump sizes are only slightly higher. It involves mostly landing to blind, horizontal grabs / glides, and handle passes. Mobes have been wakeboarding tricks for ages now, it's jsut that now they are just starting to be used in kiteboarding. Kickers and sliders is also a big revolution in wake style. Depending on how into it you want to get, boots can be added which also are used to make it as much like wakeboarding as you can, but boots don't however suit freestyle unless your insaine and won't to blow your knees out.
Personally, I prefer new school free style apposed to sheer wakestyle, because it still offers the chance to do massive jumps and old school tricks as well as the new stuff. Thats the best definition I can give of the two.
