Hey all!!

Im moving from Canada to Fremantle for a year starting in January....are there beaches that are banned in the area? Ive read about a few key spots....how will the wind be in early January? IS the "doctor" as reliable as everyone says? Looking forward and hoping I can meet up with some Fremantle-area people who could show me the ropes in exchange for a couple beers....thanks!!!!

Welcome to Freo! Kiting is not allowed from Port Beach to Leighton Beach from October to March, otherwise it's all ok. At the north end of Leighton Beach (less than a 5min drive from Freo) you can kite all year - it's marked by a big railway pedestrian bridge, you'll know what I mean when you see the beach.

Also, Woodies (Woodman Point) is about 15min drive south, the river is easily accessible within a 15min drive from Melville to Pt Walter. Cottesloe is just a bit further away. Check out www.waksa.org.au for heaps of info on the spots.

If you're looking for a mate to kite with just drop me an email or rock up to the beach, we don't bite (much anyway)

Hey Twostep,

Around Freo you have Leighton to the north and Coogee to the south and then the now famous Woodies which is a bit further south again. Pretty sure no one really kites any of the beaches in Freo itself.

In a good summer you can set your watch by the "doctor" every day bar one per week when we get troughed out and hit gets hotter than you need.

I would drop into John Geyer at SOS in Freo. John is super friendly and very knowledgable, he also has some of the best kiters in the area work for him and they ride pretty much daily around the area.

Hi Twostep

It sounds like we are going to be taking the same path. I'm going down to Oz in about a month and plan on spending some time in Freo and the rest of the west coast kiting.
