Hi,

I'm a french guy (sorry for my english ) who wants to work in Australia.
Of course if I'm posting here it's because I'm doing kitesurf and I need some tips to choose a place for living.

Obviously I'm looking for a windy place all year long but I doubt that it's existing.
Ideally I want to be in a sunny and warm place with blue water where I don't need a wet suit.
If it's possible without jellyfish and sharks in the water. I don't know what is the worse.
I don't need to be in a big city if it's possible I preferred to live in a town where I can rent a house near the beach. But maybe I'll have to go in a big city so as to find work...

So if you know the heaven for surf and kitesurfing in Australia can you tell me where it is?

Thank you

If you dont like sharks, you best not come to aust. For wind WA is hard to beat, also nth qld for half the year. But the southern states also offer some good kiting locations and conditions plus a cosmopolitan lifesyle. You will find the best parts of the country for kiteboarding aren't necesarily the best places to live. I think for the best of both worlds sth qld and the greater sydney area are hard to beat.

KMI, you say that you prefer smaller cities/towns and better winds. There's only one place you need to consider then. It's got to be Western Australia, especially around Geralton/Lancelin, Perth would probably be easier to find a decent job though depending on what you do. What job do you do in France?

I was thinking about Perth and WA, I read good stuff about this place. Beautiful town, good spot for kiting and a lot of wind all the year.
But it's a little bit to far of the other cities or countries that I want to visit like Sydney, Melbourn, French Caledonia or New Zeland.
It's not like I'll be every day in other cities but Pearth is to isolated from the rest of the country.
But it's still an option.

For answer your question, I'm a mechanical engineer at EADS Astrium. It's a company which made satellites and I'm designing earth or space observation telescope.
But if I come for working in Australia I don't care if I change my job.

It's not that I don't like sharks, it's more that I don't like the idea of beeing bitten by a shark

To summarize I have to look on the East Coast and Pearth.

Cairns, Port Douglas.....anywhere North Queensland even the sunshine coast..Maroochydoore etc would all suit your needs..... Not big cities ! but still enough life and things going on to keep you entertained and great kiting spots easily accessible.

WA- (away from Perth ) is by far the best for consistent kiting, scenery water quality basically you cant beat it although after a few weeks at places like or Ningaloo reef , red bluff etc.. be prepared to have turned quite feral also a 4wd is a must for getting the best out of kiting in WA....but as a tourist wanting work Queensland is probably a better bet particularly if you want to go to Sydney and Melbourne as well ...... I sense a road trip !

Mate, Perth is a long way from the east coast, but the flights are getting cheaper and cheaper and cheaper. I just booked a $88 one-way flight from Melbourne to Perth. So - yes - we are a long way from everywhere, but it really isn't that bad.

Plus, being a long way from the east coast, means we get the wind to ourselves

Perth is crowded, sharky, boring and isolated. Its windy, but always offshore. Way too hot for my liking too. Rent is overpriced and we probably won't even have daylight saving.

Thanks to the serious awsers and thanks to the joker even if some times I don't know if I'm really not welcomed in Australia... But I don't care

Yesterday I consulted the wind data base archive of windguru.com for the last two years, it seems that from Noosa Heads to Tween Heads it's windy.
I know it's a little bit cliché to go to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast but is it a good place for kitesurfing?

Edit : I want to specify that I'm not asking if it's a good place to live, because I know it's full of tourists and the price of house renting must be very high, but I wonder if it's possible to kite there?

Hey KMI,

Sorry about some of the answers on this post I guess some Australians have a strange sense of humour. We have a great country that is huge and there is plenty of space for more people especially kitters. Depending on your time frame here are many options. North Queensland for the next four to six months is great. Sunshine Coast is great however the winds are not consistent over our winter. Gold Coast is same. Drop me a line when if you make it to the Gold Coast. My wife if French Canadian and loves to talk in her native tongue.

Cheers,

Kenno

Jees mate,

If you don't like sharks, the last place you want to go to is Australia, especially WA.

We have far more death by sharks than just about anywhere, especially this last's year. It's a breeding ground for Great Whites up and down the west coast

You should definately check out the east coast, no sharks there (only gummy sharks), and it's always windy, locals are friendly, heaps of good jobs, cheap rent and loads of hot chicks just gagging for some Euro action.

Have fun, but remember, it's practically suicide kiting over here in the west, you should definately get a wicked camper and kite the east coast.

Good winds,

I checked your site, you've got really nice spots. Maybe I'll try the North Queensland.

Why not? I've got a childhood friend in the Gold Coast which I think Im going to see so I can see you there in the same time.
But your wife must'nt have trouble to speak French in Oz. Isn't it full of french studients and backpakers?

I'm not really afraid of wild animals or insects. I was born in French Guyana in South America so I'm used to them
Maybe I'll see you in WA kite spots just for teasing you

Maybe I'll come to Australia with a WHV and I think I'll stay for 6 months in one town, 6 months in an other town.

If you have to pick this two towns, which one will you choose, from when to when and why?

I was thinking about Perth from November to April and Cairns (or sunshine coast) from May to October.
So with this choice I can have a sunny weather all year long. I know that for Perth it's not really the windy period, but I prefer kiting a little with the sun than a lot with the rain

Thanks for your answers.

PS : please stop pick towns in the center of Australia
