Hey Mike
The guys that give you the lessons will give you some clues as to what to start off with? They would see what your skill level was and probably be best to recommend a starting set up. You may want to start with a small kite ~9m bow then as you get better compliment this with a 12m or 14m and keep the 9 for real windy days. As for a board you may want to go for a slightly longer and wider one to start with but don't get anything too old, there are plenty of 2nd hand boards around. Later you can sell this (probably at a loss) and get the latest whizz bang unit, I'm around your weight and use a Flex132 which gets me out in most conditions with a 12m bow.
Hope this helps.

Second hand gear for sure, don't be tempted by shops to shell out loads of dosh for your first gear as you have no idea what/where/when until you get into the sport.
A 12m bow kite of ANY reputable brand will do it.

Oh Yeah, what a username!
I call friends working in offices with secretaries, and i say to the secretary "Hi, can i speak to (say) eric, it's michael hunt calling, oh but eric would know me as mike hunt.
oh the childish laughter as the office erupts in laughter when the secretary announces to the office that mike hunt wants eric!!!
