Here's a thought,

It's only 12 weeks to September. How many of you are going to pass the winter wrapped up in a dooner, and how many are getting their abs and backs fully fit so you can excel at kiting this summer?

Do you go to the gym to keep fit for kiting, or do you use kiting to keep fit?

How many situps can you do? How many pullups? If you're a pro, do you do extra exercises to let you get those tweaked grabs? What are you ideas on the best exercises to improve your kiting?

..Lozzza

Ohhh S#*t do you really have to do that in winter.
I thought you put weight on in the winter so you did not become anerxic during the summer kiting.

My wife suggested a personal trainer - mainly because my paunch was so big it could hold down a waist harness hooked into 3 kites - leaving me 2 hands free to shovel in donuts.
When I mentioned to the trainer that I was into kitesurfing, it gave him something to concentrate on. Apart from a gut with its own postcode that is.
From 30 sessions this is what I've learned...
Core Strength - kiting is all about this - the midsection is where the power is delivered from the kite and then distributed through the rest of your body. The more strength and endurance you have in this part of your body, the better you'll kite.
Excercises for this include the regular abs excercises, crunches, leg lifts etc but what also surprised me is that kicks - in fact all types of martial arts translate in to directly to better performance on the water. Not sure which martial arts are best, but Boxing Training is also something which builds on core strength really fast. My advice - get down to the local dojo and throw some schnap kicks to the head mate You'll be kiting like Aaron Hadlow in weeks.
Jumping up and down on a platform at about knee level (starting and finishing with slightly bent knees ) is great for training the quads to absorb chop and still have something left for jumps. Chin up, chest up, back straight... The trainer said something about training for lactic acid buildup and pushing through it, though by the time I have done about 20 I'm bleeding from the eyes, and by 30 I'm pretty sure I've urinated myself.... but I did notice a huge effect on the water after doing this excercise over the past few months.

The great thing is that up here in Cairns, Winter IS the kiting season, so while you're all layering up and going to the gym, we're still out throwing down huge moves in nothing more than zinc cream and budgie smugglers (of course we keep a hook knife and spare sock in the harness - just in case)

From the rowing machine at the gym you can watch the babes bouncing up and down on the step machines. Don't know if it keeps me fit, but it feels good, do it.

I've been doing some " high G training " in the subie around the corners so i can train my brain/inner ear system to get used to all the G forces pulled when spinning during kiteloops :)

Gentlepeople, it is always interesting making the transition into winter for freeride (aka downhill) mountain biking. In summer one gets used to attempting anything and everything over water. On a bike (even with amour and huge amounts of suspension) the fear factor is unbelievably greater when you are forced to land not only in a relatively specific area – but one that typically consists of hard dirt!

That said freeride mountain biking is sick fun and I rate it highly (for winter, of course). It also keeps you well fit ready for spring, summer and autumn...

Anyone for a ride this weekend? My bro and I just built a head-high ramp with a 2m drop to the down-ramp (4m drop overall)...

I'll be staying fit this winter by having to run (to cold to walk) everywhere. No money for fuel for the car

Just paid for 3 new toys for summer!!

Seriously, yoga is great and I'll be working on building my overall fitness and strength.

The best training for kiting is a 4 hour sessions on the water!

When I heard that 6 packs were cool, I thought "fantastic" my 30 can block means I am 5 times as cool!

I find that unhealthy sleep deprivation and forgetting to eat properly is a miracle weight loss technique. The constant jittering from hangovers and extreme amounts of caffiene is also good for fitness.

Classic! - I thought most kiters would be fitness nuts so you could do the stuff in the magazines! I'm training hard to keep fit .. it's one of those things where you starting training to get fitter, but then find out that you really enjoy the training, so you exercise for fun (with the bonus of having a better time on the briney!)

Haha..might try selling Seabreeze.com.au branded chocolate & beer through the site!!

It is important to have vocation-specific training. In the lead-up to summer, I will make sure my carrying-kite-and-board-upwind muscle groups are finely honed. I'll start off with doing a few laps of Pelican point, then run the length of Lucky Bay. Then I'll be able to complete a Scarborough-to-Leighton walk-of-shame marathon.

I will be tough - and beyond shame.

Then I will buy a 5th line and exercise my untangling-on-the-beach muscles.

(I'm still trying to remember where the "schnap kicks to the head mate" line comes from-- is it Guido Hatzis or Fat Pizza?)

When i'm not shovelling donuts down my gob i'm usually kiting. My kiting doesn't stop over winter... it picks up. Infact i find bodyfat a handy thing during winter kitiing.

Being fat is good. I look a like a pregnant pamela anderson with all that bludda flappin around. The paunch is lookin good (6 packs??... what r they??? Just one real big one..... which is as white as snow).

I have enough bodyfat to gimme some sizeable tits. top that off with a hairy bellybutton and a fat white ass with dimples and a tan line to make Homer Simpson green with envy and i'm one helluva sexy beast .

I don't believe in exercise. i'm too lazy to do that sorta stuff. I spend all my time shovelling high calorie goodies dripping with fat and pumped full of sugar down my cakehole so when i'm typin all my BS and drivel in various forums my ass has totally swallowed the chair.
