Can any of you Sandgropers tell me what the kiting is like at this beach??. I am over there staying on the beach in a few weeks. I know I have spelt it wrong but I am told its Ten mins drive out of Marg River.

Magic spot.
Can be a little gusty inshore, so I suggest launching downwind a bit from the carpark.
The immediate wave breaks are pretty ordinary, but great fun to play. Flat water inside the reef, really pretty.

If you know how to deal with waves, you are only 500m upwind of Margarets main break, totally world famous, and on it's day, amazing.

Suggest you use your car and sail at Yallingup (north 30 min) if it is onshore, or go to Augusta (south 40 min) if you like the flat.

Just don't tell your mates ;-)

down south can be good
can be ultra crap too
be careful of wind changes
seems to be a mixing of the ssw west coast seabreeze and se south coast seabreeze
can often switch offshore with no notice
often gusty wiith serious lulls (no wind) i have stood on the headland and measured 0 -25 kn over 10 minutes
same at yallingup at xmas one day excellent, next 0-30+ kn wind, my bro getting pulled out of the water one sec, kite fell in the sea the next, just made it in at the north end of rabbits. i could get my kite in the air.

still there is some great kiting around the area, keep an eye on conditions.

Anyone down there for the long weekend I'll be keen to catch up for a session with other kiters looking for company. Not fussed about mainbreak really, heard boat ramps is the go, but happy to explore. PM me if interested. Cheers

I was in Marg's over xmas new year and kited both Gnarabup/Prevally (the boatramps bommies) and main break.

Best launch for Prevally seemed to be about half way along the beach - if you go down Mitchell drive and park in the carpark opposite Georgette way, you can walk over the dune with gear and launch from the beach in clean air and no reef on the shoreline. If you head directly out from there you have a pretty clean channel straight out the back between the breakers on the outer reefs.

I scored pretty steady 20-30kn seabreezes (when it was on) but was only there for 2 weeks, 8m switchblade II was good for most days but could have used a 7m on the really windy day (see www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=8550).

As Gasman said, the waves on the boatramp bommie itself were a bit ordinary, plenty of size but there are assorted bits of dry reef popping up all over the place and the wave tends to section a bit - still a fun spot to kite, but take the time to have a look at the lineup and the reef before charging over the shallow bits. Main Break is of course a beautiful wave but the euro poley's were swarming all over it by mid afternoon with lots of agro so wasn't so cruisy, best time to kite there seemed to be just after the seabreeze kicked in around 1-2pm and before the crowds got silly. The launch and landing spot at mainbreak is pretty dicey, I'd watch someone else navigate it first before trying it for the first time.

still a fantastic place to kite, NQ is a little bit spoilt for me now!

have fun, Andy.

If you do visit make sure you walk down past the second steps to the beach and stay downwind of any beachgoers when your launching. I nearly throttled a Euro who was using a trainer kite in amongst the suntanners a few weeks ago. Ok for him to go back to Euro while we get banned from beach. Also easier to launch with kite close to water edge as there are some tricky gusts up on the dune side.
Watch out for the reef at low tide and if you go out the back there are some nasty rocks that suck up out of nowhere as you ride the wave back in. Like neoniphon said you should check it out first. I wear a helmet and booties- the reefs are sharp- might look stupid but it saves the feet and head.
