I have been looking at a range of different cameras, what i want is; minimal lens lag, 4+ photos per second up too 15 photos, auto setting, cheap ish, 8+ mega pixel, flash, 2+ inch screen, maximum possible memory to cost eg 1.5 gig, SLR
next thing is what len(s) to get.

the camera that i think i will get is the Canon Eos, still not sure on model as it appears to be very popular and functional
i was hoping that there would be some photo gurus out there who could offer advice on what camera would be best and advice on cheap combinations or specials on cameras atm
or... if you have one you are willing to sell one in good condition

sorry, found out how much those were...

The Canon SLR's are good.
The 350D is pretty impressive for a bottom of the range D-SLR....Uses common lenses, widely available both new and second hand.
Panasonics semi compacts aren't bad, with full resolution video too.
Underwater housings for SLR's are insanely expensive though, I'd suggest you look at the quality of one of the compact cameras, eg Canon S80 and get a housing. Then get up close to the action..

Try this site, http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/ little less biase towards the products.

I have the cannon slr eos 300d or known as the rebel and kiss, the superseded one is the one you want... 350d - if your going to use for kitesurfing shots the real cost is the money you will need for a decent lens.. More than the camera itself..70mm to 300mm and ideally with filters - especially on the water shots... yes it's another money pit

i know the lenses are expensive, we have a water proof housing for a new ish cyber shot but really want a good camera for not just kiting but wake boarding and general use.
350D looks like the go at the moment really because its what a lot of friends have and recommend.

Hey Kitecrazzy,

I have a 350D which I am looking to sell. It is a really good camera but I am going to upgrade to a slightly better model with a higher FPS speed. You are more than welcome to come over and have a look or check out Canon Japan website for a full on run down of their Digital SLR’s

If you want to buy new then would recommend the EOS400 which has anti dust technology. Basically it has tiny little vibrators which stop dust and junk building up on the lens internally (from what I have read)

Cheers

Southy

If you want your camera to go off like a machine gun for multi shot, your gonna have to spend some serious dollar.

The 400d with the twin lens kit would be a good place to start. If you want to keep the price down then get the 350d second hand.

The more budget lenses should be ok here in aus as there is normally plenty of light. Low light shooting is where the expensive lenses really come into their own.

Matt.

haha, and this guy at least has an idea about putting a sentence together.
is 3 photos per second enough for kiting/wakeboarding because the pro sequence shots look to have far more than that and its hard enough to work out what they are doing then although i doubt there would b any problems with "too complicated tricks" when im using it

3/sec, the problem is it has to download them to the card, this can cause a delay making sequence shots more tricky.

Camera Video in the Carillon mal was doing some killer deals on the 400d with twin lense set up. Not sure if their sale will have finished.

"
Continuous shooting burst increase
Thanks to faster processing and an increased internal buffer the EOS 400D can shoot a burst of 27 JPEG or 10 RAW images at three frames per second before the shooting rate slows. This is almost double the performance of the EOS 350D. "

So that gives you roughly 7.5 seconds till the buffer is used up with continuous shooting - math’s isn’t my strong point, compact flash quality matters as well... cheap ones take longer to read and write too. 7.5 seconds though.. That’s a long time in the air!!!!!

lens also matter - all that quick shooting isnt much good if you got a 200 buck lens job...

I'm a Nikon user, but canon kit is excellent. One tip is to buy the 'fastest' lenses you can afford i.e. ones that open up to f2.8. You're likely to upgrade the body in the future but keep the lenses. It seems that Canon kit is easier to get hold of in Perth which is worth bearing in mind.

Kitecrazzy,

All my photos are taken with a Canon EOS 300D and a Canon 70-300 lens.

www.pbase.com:443/pbphotoswa/kitesurfing

If you are looking at the 400D I suggest you have a play with it first - I found the grip to be too small for me so I am waiting for the Canon 40D to come out before I upgrade.

The kit lenses are not that great but you only really notice it when you buy a decent lens and then you wonder how you put up with the kity lens in the first place.

For pricing also try

www.qualitycamera.com.au/

Stuart is based in Mandurah as does not have all the overheads of the stores in town. He will look after you.

Let me know if you need any more information.

FYI,

All the things mentioned, dust, multi shot burst speed, cheap lenses, etc. are dealt with in the ( wait for it)

PLUS you now can have

A camera body based kick ass stabilization system (any lens you buy is now anti shake)

PLUS 10.2 million pixels ( wait for it)

the new Sony A100 DSLR has it all..

I'm buying one...

you can shoot aprox. 3 frames per second until the card is full

or 750 shot which ever comes first

that's some fast processing...10 shot bursts in raw

Just picked up a cheapie. A pentax K100D. I got it online for $835 including a 28-50mm lense. It is only 6mpixel. In continuous shooting mode it does 2.8fps upto 5 jpeg or 3 raw.

It's not a 'pro' camera but pretty sweet for the price.
