I have just moved to Perth and was wondering where are the best places to go in the Metro area. I am still learning so somewhere nice and forgiving would be the go. I have heard of pinnaroo, what suburb is it in and what street is it off.

Cheers

Does anyone have any suggestions on what wind range I should head out in? I am about 60kg beginner and have a 12 metre Nash torch with a 148board. Look forward to any advise.

Thanks

60kg on a 148 board you should be able to stand up anyway. Any forward movement is a bonus.
Dont go out in less wind than you can easily relaunch your kite in, or more than you can comfortably control on the beach(as a beginner)if thats what you are.

15knots max id say, if in doubt less, (listen to your butterflys)

Thanks Dan,

Thats good advice, I went kiteing the other day and maybe 8-10 kts and I couldnt relaunch it easily. I thought a bit strong would of been better. Still trying to find a good wind zone.

seeing as we are due a good season :P with 20+ knot seabreezes every day, take it easy! at 60kgs on a 12m you will find your self overpowered quite quickly.

sorry wazza but to restate jans advice, you need equipment suited to stronger wind! 130 board-9m kite 5th line.
m80s are appearing every were at a cheap price or you can go heaps old school and buy a 2004 kite for next to nothing.

i would say peli pt as a good spot but it isnt anymore that its only the guys who can go upwind that can use it now thanks to CALM and their non existent migratory birds

Hey Wazza,

We teach at Pinnaroo Point and it is a fairly easy beach for learners, nice and safe, but choppy water and you can't touch bottom. You need to be able to relaunch effectively in the Ocean as your toes may get nibbled off on the long drag behind an unlaunched kite all the way to Mullaloo or even Ocean Reef in a Southerly!

At 60kg a 148 is big, really big. Great for riding underpowered as a beginner but 15 knots will be about your max on your 12. You will definately need a smaller kite. An eight or nine would compliment your 12 and see you into the 25 knot range with a bit of experience.

Pinnaroo is North of Hillarys off Whitfords Avenue and is best ridden on a weekday as the weekends are becoming a three ring circus and will be VERY crowded this summer, especially Saturdays when the Whitfords Cat club are racing.

Come and see us at the beach for some pointers and a heads up on conditions and what to look out for.

Cheers,

AKS

Thanks all good advice, what is pel pt like or is the river ok? I still have trouble launching a bit so I am not sure about the ocean yet. I want to keep my toes for the time being and the fish dont sound too good.

Leashes.. Every one says dont use them as they are dangerous. Sure I undersatnd the reasons, but body draging around all day isnt much fun. Could you use a long bit of rope as a tether (SP?) for the time being?

Hey Wazza,

Even better idea, get a good quality lesson and learn how to relaunch properly in 30 minutes, spend another 30 minutes of that lesson learning upwind body dragging and you'll never require a leash in the river or the ocean. Spend another 20 minutes learning how to roll your lines properly in the water and self rescue techniques (at least 2) and finally spend 10 minutes of advice on spot analysis so that you never think that learning at Peli Point is a good idea.

There is truck loads of other stuff you can learn but I think one lesson covering these fundementals would go a long way towards your secure future as a responsible and safe kiteboarder.

But thats just my opinion

Good winds,

1 lesson is much much cheaper than days off work and hospital bills from your board. Boards give stitches when attached to a power ging.

thats just my opinion
