Wellington Point in Brisbane/ Redland Bay is perfect in all wind directions, has shallow, flat, calm water and on the perfect tide, you can kite all day. Just ask the local crew when u get there about water depth and they will point some things out for you Be careful of the Council for you will be fined if you set your kites or any gear up above the "high tide water mark" - therefore, stick to the sandy areas for setting up.

Brighton on the North side is fairly choppy, but is still a great place to kite if you want to venture out to slightly more deep water and some chop. Excellent for boosting, but not too much area for setting up at Brighton - No fines or restrictions here.

Wello by far is my fav. spot because of the shallow smooth water, but if you are looking out for some small waves or chop, head up to brighton/ the pool for a change... Both are great spots, and I am sure there are heaps more spots other people love!

All the best, and hope for wind! It's gone lately...

Hey Elizabeth,

My local spot is Wello but I have been making the trek out to Brighton. I am just getting up on the board and going downwind quickly. The chop at Brighton is getting to me. How is Wello for beginners? You need booties yea?

Tegelstrom. I hear that Victoria Point is pretty good in a S-SE and also some other good spots in Moreton bay if you have a boat (Goat Island and Jumping Pin). www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=10700&SearchTerms=goat

Can anyone tell me more about Goat Island? Do people really kite there?

Cheers,
Rich.

wello is fine for beginners. if you cant stay upwind you should stay on the upwind side of the spit when its blowing easterly or north easterly, that way you wont get pushed out into the bay towards manly.

south easterlies are perfect for beginners cause you can just walk straight back up the spit.

yep, booties are required if you're doing alot of walking. i wear them all the time anyway, i have had some really bad cuts from walking through the mud on the SE side.

Hey Rich - Wello's my home kiting spot too, but I haven't been able to get there in about a month , so I've been hitting the pool and Brighton instead. Wello in an Easterly and South-Easterly is perfect on the straddy side as it's shallow and really flat. If it's a NE, stick on the Straddy side of the sand bar unless you want to end up at Manly or Thornside...
I admit that Brighton isn't too easy for beginners because the chop could be a real problem, so at least at wello it's flat and you don't get thrown around as much. You definately need booties at Wello lol-understatement... Cut's galore on the bottom of your feet if you come off the board, or have to walk back upwind...
That's the upside of Brighton; You don't need boots, and it makes boosting and backrolls so much easier for beginners as you can get air off the chop/ waves...

I wish the winds looked more promising for the next week and weekend... If all fails, hit the cable park

Thanks bondo and elizabeth.

Brighton can still be pretty dodge on the feet. I had a chunk taken out of my toenail last week and the week before someone cut their foot on a shell and had to get three stitches. Also hear stories of stingrays etc. Bought booties. Might wait a little before I go the boosts and the rolls

Well I guess I will be seeing you at Wello when the S-SE starts blowing (where the frig are they?). I reserved this Friday arvo/Sat and Sun for the kite but it isn't looking that great. Went to the cable park first time last week...that place rocks and improved my board skills out of sight.

You haven't heard of the stingray's at wello? - they're not just at brighton - Quite a few medium to large ones seen of late, so boots are also an extra good idea, if not just for the wello rocks

I'm hoping to hit Wello again as soon as I can... So about 3/4 weeks I'd say, but until then, Brighton and 'The Pool' will do... Hope the winds come though... Not looking too promising...

Cable park's a great thing... Excellent for board practice, edging, and gaining more confidence on the board... Even better in winter... Less people, cheaper prices, and just as fun Hitting the kickers are by far the best part All the best

Hey Peto, I would not be so worried abut buying stuff on the net. If anything happens then the bank will fix it up. I used to work for one and came across it from time to time (not so regularly).

So no one has kited Goat island?

hi rich,
goat island and the sandbank next to it (bird island), has been kited in northerlies and southerlies by one of my friends with a cruiser. he said it was not bad if a little gusty from the big straddie hills and if you get into trouble you will find yourself wallowing in the middle of the murky southern bay.
the large sandbanks opposite amity on the western side fondly known as kite island is a fantastic spot if your boat is up to it.
it sometimes covers during king tides, but it also works a treat in winter westerlies.
regards ian.
