I have just had confirmation that there will be no kiteboarding as part of the 2006 Gravity Games

I was led to believe that I had finally convinced Octagon to run the kiting @ Woodies but at the end of the day they wanted everything in the city and Herrison Island became "too hard"

Without the funding from the Gravity Games I have been told that KPWT will not be running a stand alone event. If someone has some sway with PKRA & EventCorp then maybe they can try to get an international kiteboarding event back into Oz?

I think that for the sake of all riders but especially the young ones its absolutely necessary to hold a Kiting event in Australia, preferably Western Australia. Otherwise the sport becomes to distant and abstract. We have World Class beaches First class wind come on Australia surely we can get PKRA interested? What about a lobby to the WA government?

Go for it. The issues you need to address are:

  • Sadly its all about money

  • WA Govt (EventsCorp) want to support events that bring significant money to WA or have the potential to - see criteria at http://www.westernaustralia.com/en/Industry/EventsCorp/Event+Funding+Criteria.htm

  • Kitesurfing is attractive to EventsCorp but only it can put images of WA onto TV screens in target tourism markets ie USA, UK, Japan - this was the main reason that the event was part of the KPWT circuit last year (they could demonstrate better TV coverage than PKRA)

  • Those images have to intice overseas vistors to come here - unfortunately from an EventsCorp perspective that does not mean world class kitesurfing - it means things that are attractive to a much larger market ie nice beaches, clean safe city, lifestyle, etc - this was one of the problems they had when they went down to Woodies and saw cement ships in the background

Of course if you can get large commercial sponsors to replace the funding from EventsCorp then you just need to give them what they want - usually more cost effective exposure than than options like TV adds!

Good luck - if you need a hand I'm more than happy to help try and get an international event back here

Events corp have publicised that their process of applying for funding for 2007 is well and truly up and running. (has been for nearly a month)

A big focus for allocating money is exposing regional areas for tourism.

Can't see any reason why a Pro event can't be held at Pt Moore/Dongera/Coronation/Shark bay...anywhere except PERTH actually. (Sorry Perthites you gonna have to keep on drivin' North!)

Could you check a few things out through your contacts Ian?. Maybe WAKSA might have an inclination to do something like this also?.

Money is there for an event/s.

Well, then find the money and organise a comp for them then.

In response to everyone's questions and suggestions, the WAKSA committee has discussed and explored several options to assist in keeping the GG in Perth. However due to the requirements of all the different parties involved we have been unable to come up with a workable suggestion.

As outlined at the AGM the current committee is focused on safety, maintaining access, and providing events and comps that are aimed at the majority of the WAKSA membership.

It would be great to have a professional comp in WA, however we are extending ourselves already organising the social events and state titles for next season, as well as the access issue at Pelican Point.

We believe that events of this size and nature need corporate sponsorship and should be handled by paid professionals.

Can anyone provide a ballpark figure of how much sponsorship we need to run an event like the GG?

It's defintely $2M+ for full GG type event - if it's just a PKRA/ KPWT kite surfing event then I think it's around $AUD 180K - prize money alone is usually around the $US 30-60K mark - Tim Thirsk, Octagon and/or EventsCorp can give you a better idea
