Don't let the water get in your mouth on the last of the outgoing tide.
The water tastes and smells like something you would put down your dunny.

I have queried the council on two occassions, with a promise of a test being done and notified of the result. But with five outlets into the river from the sewerage plant, I am not suprised a reply has not been forthcoming.

Like all councils, I suppose more people, more rates, more SHEIT!

Try ringing the Qld EPA and tell them your concerns, as all sewage treatment plants (Qld) have to comply with QLD EPA discharge licenses.

The sewerage spill was in the Mooloolah river to the south of the Maroochydore river. I would say no doubt they comply with QLD EPA, but don't think they would fill their own swimming pools with the discharge. Thanks though for the suggestions FI - could be worth the cost of a call.

It just so happens that I took this aerial photo of it on the saturday you are talking about (30th September 2006) Heres the link...
http://www.abovephotography.com.au/stockphotos/sunshinecoast/MaroochyRiver.html

EPA Marine strandings and pollution ph 1300 130 372. The Mooloolah river does not link up with the Maroochy river at all. Sometimes its perfectly clean and you can see the bottom in 5m of water othertimes its brown as 'crap'.

Echostorm.Sorry to confuse,Iwas answering two previous questions.
Was not suggesting the two rivers are joined, only that the spill occured in the river to the south the(Mooloolah river).Have not seen the water clean here for years.
The smell and the soap like foam in the (Maroochy river) has been noticeable for the last three years. This happens on the last of the outgoing tide, often with the water clear as. After heavy rain the river
turns brown due to the run off,but only has a earthy smell, not the other.
Thanks for the number

it must be the island shaped like a steak with obvious green bits growing on it that is causing the problem.

Dont worry mon , compared to botany bay in sydney , Maroochy is pristine water and in any case we all have truckloads of bacteria in our systems so a little more crap wont make any difference. kite with confidence.

Goose, could you get affected when travelling to a completely different area to where you normally kite? I'm going to thailand, 200km SE of Bangkok for a month and intend to kite at every chance. I imagine the water flora would be very different.

i use to get ear infections.. nearly constant as we ride in the outgoing tide.. this has gotten better. but my skin has turned yellow - this seems to be less of a problem.

my suggestion is don't go in the water with an open wound.
i surfed in there for years and we all know not to go in there with a cut on you after lots of rain

Sewerage spills, bad smells, can't eat the fish, ear infections, wound infections- Is this an attempt to keep the numbers down?
