To all the STKILDA CREW that are interested in getting together and building a slider. All we need is a few people to chip in money, ideas of places to store it and the construction need.

I have a rough idea of a 2mtr 45 degree up ramp with a 3 mtr flat with 100mm PVC tubing, the up ramp will consist of 2 support posts with 45 degree intersection with the tops cut off and screwed maybe glued in some areas. The join of the ramp and the flat will consist of a 60 degree join and heat gun it to a 45 degree angle and file down where needed. The flat will consist of 3 support posts with 88 degree intersection with the tops cut off and screwed and glued from the support posts. The rail height will be 1.5 mtrs above the water and the posts submerged 40 - 50cms.

If you are interested in being involved or if you have any ideas that you would like to add, please feel free.

*note KBV takes no responsibility for injuries on the slider*

Cheers JROD

Also, are you just allowed to dig obstacles into the water? i personally wouldnt want this thing, it would just be another thing to hit....

I've built a slider before with the intention of just sticking it in the sand like your idea... It just fell over after 1-2 hits and was a pain to keep up... Maybe leave your posts as they are, but add a few horizontal supports 50cm up that will sit on the ground...

Ive been told that horizontal bars of 2 mtrs is needed to support it. how many bars do you think i need?

build it on some pontoons with a nice big base.

that way you can just anchor it down with some lines into the water.

this guys got the right idea

or triangular points into the stand rather then just straight down cause otherwise it will need to be really deep

I dont really want it either, it more a matter of if i wanted to ride at StKilda, you would basically have the entire pond area reserved for people hitting the slider, and judging by your previous response you would be very polite in your manner when approaching people regarding this

you want more than 3m to slide, go for 6 or you will be bored with it too quickly.

and make it floating so you can move it for different wind directions

Really? did u have the same support beams under neath? or was it just too steep? is 2 mtr ramp and 3 mtr flat long enough. Was the rail itself strong enough?

thanx for you input

cheers bud

Don't build it any steeper than 30 degrees, you will like it so much better the more mellow you make it. Plus if u hit it at any sort of speed ur going to miss the entire flat section with that sort of angle.

Floating is a lot more work. My suggestion is 20degree up ramp (3m long with) with a 6m flat section. about 50cm above the water. Wont fall over as easy and you will actually be able to do stuff on it.

yeah that sounds bout right.. but bit higher above the water..orelse no point having an up ramp when can olly 50cm above the water onto it.. use that pipe to make it longer if your only making it that high above the water..just have a go and see how u go.. mellow and long rather then steep and tall will always have greater fun..

That design will need some lateral support. If you don't break it hitting the upward slider it won't support any sideways (perpendicular to the rail) loads.

Also I agree with 45 degrees being too steep. I reckon go for something 20 - 25 degrees.

Why not use a base like a heavy picnic table?

Start out with a beginners' slider, make it as bombproof as you can, and then when you get bored with it, make a new, higher difficulty slider.

If anyone had any contacts within the snow industry maybe you could get an old rainbow rail from Mt Buller and modify that.

As for storage, I always wonder why that disused building next to where the kite schools set up isn't taken over as a kitesurfing/windsurfing clubhouse

jarrod,

once everyone has tried it a few times and can ride it well everyone will all be thinkin 3 metres is too short. 6m sounds good with a 25 degrees upramp then its not too steep and nicce and long. also when r u thinking of starting it coz this weekend would be good so we could get it for the states.

ewan... I reckon you are on the money with your up-ramp. If you had a 30 degree hill you would be struggling to walk up it mate. I know you have the lift of the kite to consider but baby steps baby steps aye bro

just an idea maybe check out the slider and kicker that will be at the state titles and get your ideas off that. its about 16.4 metres long good up ramp not to step and has solid frame supports.

That place is currently being stripped and prepped for something.
Last time i saw it there were building site barracades and fences put up all around it. There was also a notice on the right hand side closest to where Kite Republic run their school/show, but i can't for the life of me remember the names of the builders or architects.

Ewan i dont think i can get the money to build it this weekend. If u can get a few people to chip in at the beach help me out. Depending on the construction of it, it will cost about $200 and more is needed if im going to make the top rail 2 x 90mm and 3 up and 3 flat..

gtslingshot the 16.4 is alread made, its just getting welded together now as a leg got lost. its all steal frame, and timber top with nylon sheeting on top. i also have a pvc slider that u talk about, but its only 11m long. it has no up ramp, u just ollie up onto it. the slider made from pvc is solid as and they dont fall over if hit properly. just make sure that u drill small holes in the legs so the air can escape when u dig the legs in. oh, and cut the legs so on a 45 degree angle so they are sharp and dig into the sand. and 45 degrees is waaay too step for an upramp, have a look at cable park sliders to get some better ideas of angles.

cheers tapeworm
