Or for that matter - anywhere in the harbour?

Geez that sux. I find it so offensive that the gov can make rules like that. Aren't they there to represent us. Would the majority of people in sydney really care if we were allowed to kitesurf in the harbour? I know it's a busy harbour but not all of it is in use by ferries etc.

Guys you cant kite there! Years ago 2001-2003 we were kiting there until the guy who owns the sea plane started complaining to the waterways, council and aviation authority about us, many meetings later and a gentlemans agreement was established. The other issue was kiting in the shipping lanes, a few locals were rather peeded off like Duncan Place and Dr Blobb since they lived locally and could now not kite there. These bans have been put in place for your own safety and others, if you choose to kite there expect to be issued a fine if you get caught. What are the chances of getting caught? pretty good!! So my advise is just dont go there. This all stemmed due the good work of AKSA and the people on the committee including myself. So be responsible, care for your sport, dont ruin it for others, and if you happen to see someone kiting there, be freindly by letting them know its not permissable.

I don't know if a complete ban on kitesurfing in the harbour should be described as the 'good' work of teh AKSA.
As i said, it's a big harbour. Surely we could have a couple of bays where we are allowed to have fun.... oh but of course.... the is not a $ in it for the gov.

The harbor would be a horible place to kite.
Once you take the ferry's, tour boats, jet boats, morons with power boats that don't know what their doing, people with power boats that know what there doing, learn to sail boats, people out on a cruise on there sail boats, the race boats, large ships, work boats, navy boats, and the float planes out of the equation (don't forget the kyakers). You have a gusty shifty breeze to deal with.
A gentlemans agreament to stop kiting there is probably the best out come there could have been. If that had turned into a $**t fight your can bet that we wouldn't be allowed in Botany Bay or at least with'n 50km of the airport.

ive often daydreamed about heading out to sea on a boat in winter to catch the westerlies that you can see speeding up about 10km off the coast... do you think they would be too gusty?

OK - mike i'm sort of agreeing with you on this one. I'm not sure what sort of gentleman's agreement you would sign that essentially restricts you doing something.
whether it is a great place or not is not the point.
i'm hoping the flip side of the agreement really was that maritime would lay off botany - but nsw is a massive fan of you can't do this here there and everyewhere, so i'm sure its only a question of time sadly.
for you own good of course
