Hey all,
Interesting thread .... kinda. Does anyone actually believe that Best are the only company that have been experimenting with advanced cloth types such as laminates and advanced polymers etc?
I know for a fact that other companies have been prototyping and experimenting with ultra high tech fabrics and have made kites that are higher performance than currently available generic kites. The problem comes down to longevity and cost.
Who will be prepared to pay through the nose for a kite that is 10% better than the best (performance) current kite? And will they be happy with the condition it is in in 12 months time? This is the problem. I am not disputing that the Hellfish will be an advanced kite or that Cuben Fibre will be lighter, stronger or whatever, but people choose kites with an eye to weighting between cost and performance and hype, perhaps Best have a winner here? That will depend upon performance to cost ratio after time has past.
Only time will tell and lets all hope that this new technology is successful and that the general public all embrace the extra $400 or $500 per kite, that we will pay for this technology, that way, all companies will start using advanced fibres, performance will leap forward and the cost of kites will increase by 25% in the near future.
Not sure what my point is, but it is going to be interesting to reflect back over these threads in 12 or 18 months time with hindsight as our guide.
I honestly wish Best good luck on their endeavour and anxiously await the Hellfish so I can ride one myself and then form my own opinion.
Good winds all
