Howdy - just got a nice pair of Blueeyes Squids for my birthday to protect my eyes. Ordered them at a nice price via the website.

Only problem is they are way painful when combined with my trusty old Gath (digging into my temples). I tried cutting a bit of a channel into the Gath lining to give a bit of extra space which helped a bit but still far too much pressure.

I don't really want to say goodbye to a helmet or goggles. Does anyone use these goggles (or Sundogs as they seem to have the same shape frame) with other helmets?

Cheers

Protec Ace Water fits 100% with glasses. Also had the same issues with my last Gath helmet, cut channels and it made a small difference but ultimately moving to a protec solved the problem completely.

To get rid of salt build up, use vinegar (not sure who worked that one out originally - its not like you dunk your glasses in a bowl of vinegar accidentally).

Vinegar is one of the few items that actually dissolve salt build up, I've used it already on things like salt buildup on zips.

On the issue of glasses, use seaspecs, US$100 for 3 pairs with their current special, and free shipping by fedex express means it arrives within 4 days. At that price you don't mind replacing them as often although mine are prescription so it means i have to take care of them.

For misting you can use something like "cat crap" which you can buy on ebay pretty cheaply. Its an antifog polish designed for motorcycle visors, it normally last 5-10 sessions before you have to add more and polish up again.

I wear newer - 06 gath "gedi" helmet with sea specs and have had no probs with being to tight or uncomfortable. pretty sure pro-tec helmet has no ear protectors like gath gedi which i reckon are worthwhile - have met a few crew who have ruptured ear drums coming down hard into water - ouch

Protec Ace Water have no ear protection, Protec Ace Wake do have air protection. I prefer no ear protection, makes me a lot more aware of what is happening around me.

G'day mate,

I was wondering where you got your Pr-tec helmet from?

I found an ad from Kitbag in Midvale for ex-army Protecs but they were $80 and the model that don't have ear pieces. I need to protect my ears (I am a sound engineer). Do yours have the ear inserts?

Cheers,

Ian

Hi Rod, We are placing an order with Protec soon, so if you want something in particular, let me know and I'll get it in for you, just let me know colour, model and head size in cms (circumference).

Protec have a massive range of helmets for BMX, SK8, downhill, wake, you name it. The water range are: Two Face, Ace wake, B2 Wake and Classic full cut water. All are full head and all but the Classic feature removeable ear guards with water channels. (Classic has hard shell ear coverage).

Good winds,

This is not a troll, just a, possibly ignorant, noob question: What is it that people wear helmets to protect themselves from in kitesurfing? Is it common to whack your head with something solid?

G'Day Par,

If you've ever done a slider or kicker, you'll know the answer to that one. Also, a good way to stop blowing an eardrum with a violent face slap to the water side on.

I've tripped a rail at speed so quick I thought I was going to black out from the head impact. I had to rest for a minute to wait for the "stars" to disappear.

Also a good idea if in the surf, if you smacking a pitching lip, you can get the nose of the board in the face or cop the board in the head if you come out of the straps during the same maneouvre.

Wearing helmets is personal taste, I dont wear them because I like the freedom of wind in my hair etc and like to hear whats going on around me. Once I start getting into GPS speed runs, I plan on wearing a helmet.

Good winds,

Surprisingly enough yes, if you check the stats, most of the deaths that have occuring in kiting could have been avoided if the person was wearing a helmet. I personally witnessed a girl I knew well get lofted during a squall and come down on her head. If it wasn't for the helmet she would have been dead, as it was with the helmet, she still spent a month in a coma.

Hi Kitehard

Thanks for letting me know. I'm not sure what one or what size I want which is why I was hoping to find a shop with a few different ones and sizes to try on. I have looked at the web site though and the blue Ace Wake looks ok and I suppose I'm a large but I like to wear a cap underneath to have a peak for the sun so would need to try it on. Let me know when you get some in and I'll meet up and take a look.

Thanks
