don't use a board leash, and you don't need a helmet.

this is what I use .. it has a nice neoprene cap inside and protects the ears
nicely in 35+ knots wind. I get ear infections easy when it is blowing so I use
it for that mostly. In really good conditions I do not use it that often unless
I try new things and intend to crash a lot

Feels good and in my book better than any of the rigid ones, which are total rubbish when they don't really fit, and none of them fits me well..

good luck

I had this comfort blanket thing with a reel leash for years - always wore a GATH helmet - Now I feel naked WO it -
- I always wear sunnies - so it stops U from loosing those.
- makes a reasonable platform for a GOPRO.
- The GATH helmet goes below the ears with an option to open a port to improve hearing - so will protect from damaging ear drum.
Having said that I have never been hit on the head when Kboarding.

I made my youngster wear one whilst he was learning - a) till he learnt to control the kite & b) when we kited in the river mouth too easy to loose a board so used a reel leash - and he uses helmet when wake boarding.

Now he does not wear one (13 yo) - although with kite loops and jumps etc the risk is there - I let him choose. (Yet to go out in a gale i.e. 26+ knots will insist he wears one then - it is a risk assessment).

Going through the same routine with another of my kids.

I am more insistant on him wearing sunnies - which reminds me - need to get him another pair of SB sunnies - last lot rusted out the hinge.

Never a bad idea to have one - if UR still learning good instinctive kite control - wear it - if UR passed that then talk through with yr mum the risks etc when it might be useful to wear one - chances are if it drives U nuts it won't see the light of day in a couple of months.
Unless U want to wear it go for style more than function.

Cheers AP

I wear a protec ace wake. Gaths seem very flimsy and uncomfortable in comparison imho.

Gath Do a good helmet.

I wear one with a visor as it is good to get a bit of shade from the sun.

Doesnt look cool but I have to use my head for work and general everyday thinking so decided it was worth protecting.

They look a bit clumsy but you don't even notice them when riding.

Dont use a board leash!

I used an old Gath surf helmet for a couple of years but now use a Protec B2 Wake water helmet.

It has better padding and removeable ear flaps.

It is comfortable, holds my glasses on, not too hot in summer and is nice to have on for big stacks.

Just make sure whatever you buy is compliant with the standards for watersports, much like you should buy a compliant cycle helmet or motorbike lid.

Personally I will use my helmet (Gath) when it is heavier weather or I am using a directional (more prone to getting blown about and knocking me on the bonce I find, plus fin nastiness). I also use it in very hot weather for sun protection.

No harm in looking after yourself and even if it makes you look a little bit dorky for the sake of keeping your Mum happy go for it.
