"Fashions are arbitrarily adopted by a reactive population who base their decisions not on the quality of a product, but rather on the actions of their peer group. The paper, published in the academic journal Evolution and Human Behaviour, claims that trends gain popularity because populations are constantly seeking change; but when it comes to adopting a new fashion they will look to their neighbours rather than to reason." http://www.gizmag.com/go/7250/

This explains a lot about kitesurfing

OK Ian

So impressed am i by your depth of reading on this matter that next time I see you i am going to try your flysurfer, you certainly make them look good, but not the tunnel board .....no way. There is fashion and there is fashion ...and I am more likely to be seen parading myself on the beach in a hot pink G string than be seen riding a tunnel board. Blame a herd metality all you like

Ian what kind of fuel does your car run on? Which side of the road to you drive on? What language do you speak?

Get over yourself and your "individual" kite type.

Jeepers how long till the kite season starts again so we can do without all these innocuous posts.

I reckon that all foil users would fly LEI's if everyone else started flying foils!

Its their nature to try to be different and not fit in !Then when they dont get attention at the beach, they come on the Forums and make a fuss to draw attention to themselves.Me,me,me,I,I,I,I,.

Ian, the trend is stated to change every 30 years depending on the number of ideas within a general population. The larger the list, lets say for example types of kites, the faster it changes. At the moment we have foils, bows, sle's and c kites (feel free to correct if i have left anything out). Theoretically, this would lead to a resurgence of foils in approximately 300 years going by the proportional changes stated in the article.
Thus it would appear that much like the mullet haircut which still exists in a minority in society, waiting for its resurgence, the foil kites will also make a come back!

But in all seriousness, the essence of the article is very accurate: "In most situations, such as voting or investing, it is best for society if people make their own rational informed choices."

Good on ya Ian, good to see you are keeping up the light hearted banter.

Hey , User.
Ian has probably been kiting 8-9 times longer than you have and still has less Seabreeze postings than yourself! Seems to me you're the one trying to attract attention!

Yes, it's called social Darwinism, just seems like the current environment supports LEIs. Now that depowerability has hit the streets, Flysurfer is evolving through selective pressures. Manfred Muller developed all this technology 6 years ago. We all need to go back and read "The Origin of Species" (published 1859).

Ian,
If you are searching for a reason,
as to why inflatos are mainstream kites and foils are not....
Then it can't be herd mentality.
The sheep can't be that dumb.
The cattle are more street-wise than you think.
And it's not a choice between being an 'individual' or being a fashion-victim.

Fashion in kitesurfing is having a rastafarian colour scheme on your kite.
Fashion in kiting is a super-sized graphic of Che Guevara's head printed on the canopy.
Fashion in wavekiting is buying a 6' shooter instead of using the twin-tip,
when you have never surfed in your life.
Fashion is a tattoo on your girlfriend's breast...
Fashion is a gold ring pierced thru her soft nipple.

And sadly fads fade like the indelible hues of an ancient tat,
on an aged and saggy tit.

Individuality in kitesurfing would be if you flew a kite that you built yourself,
built to your own original design.
The majority of us are just victims of trends and good little consumers.

It could be said people that fly foils are part of a cult... and we all know what path that leads to..... To communism? No! But to mass suicide! (and can you blame them?)

poor jokes aside... I love the idea of flying a kite that self inflates with the wind, but also love kites that don’t come arranged with a bowl of bridle lines. I think that may be the defining “fashion” that people have when thinking about foils.

After saying that if I had the cash I would buy three more foils off you Ian... they are well built kites, but as I said I like my kite to be simple so with the cash flow limits it aint going to happen as I like my inflatable more.

Oh and by the way... herds generally come together from social necessity. That is the mentality of it and that is why humans don’t herd... they just mob – like angry sheep.
