I was there in September, don't bother taking your gear. It's way to shallow most of the time unless its high tide and then launching is a problem.
Just enjoy the marine life, it's amazing. All the sharks come in at high tide and snorkeling with 20 of them at a time is a real buzzz.

I took a 13m foil and a board.
Managed to kite the 1st day (7/12/2006) and the next morning. Kited over sharks, rays and turtles. Kited over to the next reef. Crystal clear blue water.
2nd day I got an hour and then managed to burn my back real bad, which spoilt the rest of my week.... I had put ample sun screen on, but I have a harness/impact vest, which rubbed the sun screen off. Couldn't sleep on my back, hurt like hell putting a t-shirt on and it just burnt all bloody day and night, and without AC I couldn't even cool down.
For the next 5 days I got a bit of a sea breeze, but never over 12kt.
U can launch on the NE side no problem.
I also went 12/2005 and there was no wind for the duration of my stay. Heron was awesome when it was all inclusive.

Thanks for the info guys. We had a great time at heron, did not take the kites in the end and there was no wind to kite anyway. But we both thought it would be a great kite spot when there is water. Next time we will take the kites. Diving and snorkelling was fantastic.
