When its blowing a S/ SE'er, is the sandy beach just south of the Urangan Boat Harbour fine for kiting (no hidden reefs etc)? It looks heaps better for wind than the two beaches just north of the harbour which seems to get gustier, weaker wind after its passed over the harbour and breakfree resort.
Is there any other spots around hervey bay that work a treat in a S/ SE wind, coz i need a decent kite 2moz. (no fishing).

P.s. Ive been kiting on the 12m Hifi Comp (blue/ white/ black with gold logo) and 15m hifi (light blue/ black)

have only one warning, dont be a tool like i did a few years ago and kited up wind of the pier, the current rips through there, i was about 150 metres up wind (total brain fart) of the pier, great flat water spot, crashed in the middle of the channel, kite went down, current and wind working with each other no resistance against kite to quickly water re-launch, hit the safety (kite leashed still attached) tried to swim across current to get to where i could stand, didnt make it in time, kite wrapped around pier pillars (oyster infected) then i hit them (pillars) with my board, placed my board which i got too just before hitting the pier, between me and the razor sharp oysters, kite was wrapped leading edge centre around an oyster rich pilon against the current which from the pier heads straight out into the sea, being pushed up and down against the oysters with the waves, released kite leash, used that to anchor myself against the pier wrapped up lines (very slowly) deflated leading edge to slowly work the kite around the pillar so it was then in the current (now downwind of pier and free from oysters) used lines to secure it to the pier, then used my safety leash to secure my board to the pillars, then bear hugged the oyster clad pillar and climbed up out of the water about 3 meters up, got to the top of the pier, blood soaked (and 40+ stiches later), and was greeted by a local fisherman who's golden statement was (gees mate that looks like a fun sport). Then had the walk (well woddle) of shame back to my beach launching site to be greeted by my girlfriend who was orginally tasked to come and get me on the jet ski straight away if i went down because even worse i foresore the potential of what had just transpired when i orginally set out (stupid me) at the exact moment i crashed, she had just turned around to go and "get something from the car" and when she got back, she couldnt see me and thought i had gone around the headland, and didnt see the blood soaked pier koala hugging the oysters 300 meters away. (poor thing felt very bad, but not her fault).
.
so after that rambel, DONT KITE UPWIND of the PIER!!! its a man eater, and one of the most stupid things i have done in this sport, but lesson learnt. The downwind area of the Pier is great as i discovered later. lol.
.
Though must admit the kite didnt get a single cut on it and is still going strong and the board just has a few scratches as a friendly reminder to "LOOK before you LEAP!"

Yeah, that deep channel isnt the safest. A couple of days ago after i jumped what was left of the ferry wake, there was a bit of a lull and the kite fell outa the sky. There was hardly any current luckily. I tried relaunching it unsuccesfully in the lull. I swam to the kite without rolling the lines on my bar (bad mistake); so by the time i reached my kite and started to paddle back to the beach the lines were wrapped heaps around my legs. The Swim wasnt too bad, it was the epic mess of lines i had to get off my legs and untangle when i got back to the beach.
Note to self: Always wrap lines around the bar when swimming to kite.

Davem207: Good to hear ya kite survived the ordeal; skin grows back.
