Does anyone know what the wind is like at Hinze Dam?

I've just secured permission - in writing too, figure that one out?! - from the Gold Coast Council and Water Department guys to use it so long as its not near the dam wall as its being repaired.

Which means theres still a sugar load of area to scout out.

So does anyone know what the winds are like at advancetown region etc and how consistent are they?

I remember advancetown being bloody windy years ago but havent been up there for half a decade.

um - you are kidding right....right?

It's in the valley of a big Caldera. Surrounded by mountains. Any wind coming in there would redefine the word gusty....

I used to drive past it on the way to hangliding at Beachmont and I was always looking down into a tight valley to see it.

Anything is doable I guess, and maybe you would get something kitable if the wind was coming from the North and over the spillway, but I would be taking a rescue craft with me, or be happy for a long swim if needed.... I think perhaps there are better spots at the coast.

Nothing wrong with asking a question or looking for new sites Micky.

It was always considered that a NW was unkitable here in Moresby and you might as well pack up your gear until the SE tradies come in after Easter.....until I crawled through Google Earth, saw a place 30mins away that MAY have been workable in a NW.

Went there last Sat, expecting to be disappointed - found a village, a 1.5km long 10m wide sandbank going out to an island, a 1m deep lagoon behind it, 18kts of clean clean wind coming across the sandbank. It was one of the best sessions I have ever had up here or anywhere. Made even better by the sure knowledge that no one had ever ever kited there before.

It's 25kts today, same direction....bring on the weekend

I've been wakeboarding on Burumba Dam when the wind was cranking through the valley!

Although would have been pretty gusty

Rubbish day for wakeboarding

I have kited there before, it is dodgy (like Paradox says - redifines the word gusty)but doable - quite cool being in fresh water, but never bothered to go again

man I don't know hey. there is a lot of flat water there. in some places there is a straight line distances across or along the dam of between 1 and 3 kms. I'm no expert (at all) but the idea of being allowed to kite Hinze dam definitely sounds exciting enough to investigate to me. Be very interested to hear how you go if you give it a try. I thought it was illegal.
