nice area....
I was on the yucatan peninsula in January 2006.
Holbox is quite remote - and mostly a reserve, and so never made it there in the end. If memory serves - there are no cars on the island - so getting around with gear can be tricky.
And being a reserve - I heard kiting can be banned....

I did get lots of kiting in at Tulum - awesome beaches , and only 2 hours drive from Cancun.
The roads are a nightmare. Get good insurance.

Cozumel was very windy when I was there - but it was hard to find decent launch spots.

Best spot I found for wind was Progresso - not far from Holbox

Note - there is only one kiteshop in the entire peninsula . I had equipment failure - my LE bladder exploded - whcih meant I spent the rest of the holiday having the worst time of my life cause it was windy and I couldnt kite.

Hi I'm from Mexico, and lived in that area.

Holbox is beautiful and has a lot it has of places to stay. The boat trip is usually good with good weather conditions, if not its crap! The good thing is there are amazing places to kite. Check the forecast before doing the trip. Depending in the time of year that you are planning to go you can snorkel with whale sharks and it is an excellent fishing spot too.

Other spots you should check for kiting are: Telchak (30 min from Merida), Isla blanca (1hr from Cancun), Cozumel and Tulum.

Cozumel is my favorite spot and probably will be there in a few weeks. When are you planning your trip?

Now there are kiteshops at Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel

Holbox is a great li'l place. I was there June '06 and enjoyed a few days of kiting. One of the local beach-front hotels had a European co-owner who kited regularly.

Getting there: Easy. Jump on a bus from Cancun (<$10) for a few hours, then catch a water taxi (~$5) to the island, and sit on a golf cart-taxi (~$1) hooning along the sandy streets. Great fun :)

Orientation. The beach is nice 'n wide. Just walk N along the beach to get past the fishing boats. The locals hanging out on the beach will tell ya where it's ok to launch from. Rebuilding from the hurricane a few years ago should be all done by now.

The island had a weird sea breeze because it was NNE (completely messing up my West Oz sense of what's proper). The wind was marginal when I was there, so I did the packaged tour thing to snorkle with the whale sharks. It was EXCELLENT! Profoundly beautiful to see a series of enormous, graceful living giants, gliding along at ~3 knots just below the waves.

Lonely Fleece (planet) lists the cheap places to stay in Holbox. I'd suggest a few days in Cancun/Isla Mujeres/Cozumel in Americana kitsch (yes, it's comfortable) and then bugger off to Holbox for better winds and kiting.
