Sorry to tell you but Rotto is not very good on a northerly,(Not very kite friendly at all really) Ricey beach is a possibility but is quite a ride with all your gear and the beach is not that long with lots of rocks and reef at either end, you can catch the bayseeker bus but you are then restricted to the hourly timetable. If you get out that far you might want to check out Stark bay too but just watch out for all the moorings.
I think i would recommend just sticking to the South/East end of Thompson bay between the Army jetty and Natural jetty.

P.S. Don't rely on the wind being much stronger at Rotto than the mainland the weather station is on the top of the lighthouse hill, which i think is forty or fifty mtrs above sea level hence the higher readings.
Good luck, if all else fails its still a nice place to have a quite ale overlooking the ocean.

G'day lads, thanks for the tips, here's some from me... Just got back from Rottie this late arvo. Yesterday's northerly was a shocker in the northern section of the isle but the east end of southerly exposed Porpoise bay gave good shelter from gusts and waves and some fantastic high winds for getting out with my 9mtr... on almost perfectly flat water.

Today I headed further out west with the rental bike (unless Ure L. Armstrong take the ones that have all the gears). West end of Strickland is good with a SW or even a westerly. Plenty of space to self launch off the beach from the water's edge and shallow turquoise water in the reef is simply amazing with clear and soft sand on the bottom. With a Westerly just do a 50 mtr downwinder to get onto speed and away from the dunes blocking the wind, than put the kite high up and head out to open water. You can stay inside the outer reef if you don't like the swell or tag out via the southern part and back up in again with the swell. Just stay clear from reef and rocks in the mid section of the beach. Same for the west end of Salmon. Tag out in the middle and back up into the lagoon. Wear booties if Ure not too sure. I took mine off imddiately once I knew where to tag out and back in again.

The northern part of Rottie is good for a big G with plenty of buoys to wrap Urself with kite around. That's ol
