Ive just found a new kite that I can guarantee will handle all wind strenghths and conditions with ease. I need no skill to use it and will never run the risk of getting injured.
I leave it in its bag in my van!.... Simple

How safe is too safe?

When will instant depower kill the skill and thrill of this sport?

Who took up this sport wanting to remain safe and in control always?

I reserve the right to land upside down from height fully powered nose diving my kite out of control....
No, I spend my weekdays looking forward to it!

Im out by myself in my piece of bay trying stuff thats clearly beyond me. Im smiling. The peanut gallery must love me!

And i always stick to rule #one

When i stuff up make sure Im the only one who gets hurt.

Long live the C kite

I think that bow kite riders (well users cause they dont really ride)....should be first branded, beaten and sent to Uluru with no meat.

Interesting........ Then the remainder of the tax payers foot the bill for the lifelong support of a quadraplegic ex kiter.

No such thing as too safe.

thanx fitzy for those sentiments,
kites pull like speedboats to get our boards on the plane.
kites should have simple ways to dump power, no fumbling, no remembering tricky skills,
then everyone can rad out, if they want to!

a new thing i dont like about bows are they dont send the beginners miles down wind all the time so now they crash right were everyone else is riding, what happened to the natural order.

Geee, that's where my kiting is going wrong, I need a C kite to show of got big balls. God forbid, I ride bow, and eeekkk, and it's yellow. Fair dinkum, I think some of you guy's need to pull your heads out of each others ar$es.

Bows have their place, IMO; you'd have to be a ****er not to recommend a bow to a beginner. I started on a bow and I'm still on it, but lately I'm thinking of going to a C for the style of riding I wish to follow.

"Thank god for bows,” I say, you see enough sh$t going on kite spots with the influx of newbies (of which I'm one), even with the de-power. Fantastic, get rid of the bows and we can get the sport banned. altogether

Just started up a mate on a 13m 06 Fuel on a 132 FLX. Up and going on woodies onshore side on a board in probably less than 3 hours learning. Nothing wrong with C's for learning, 5th line is great for begginers I have found. IMO C's feel much more direct in their power and see no reason why Bow's would have helped my mate at all.

Sounds as if your mate is having a good time and there is nothing wrong with learning on a C, your mates lucky that he has you to guide him. I for one, didn't know anyone that kited when I started and most newbies that post on seabreeze asking questions in relation to "what type of kite should I buy" don’t either, otherwise they would have got the low-down from there mates. My post is in relation to these types of newbies.

I fly remote control aeroplanes and have taught friends on low wing stunt planes, but if a newbie flyer did the same without experienced supervision, they’d be likely to crash and burn pretty quick.

All I'm saying is, put all the testosterone away, and give practical advise.

I tried a C kite for the first time last month (10 mtr T3), and loved it.

If you want to get spanked by a bow kite - easy - just set your stopper ball so that you only have 10% de-power.

Either that or invert your kite in the surf, have your bar get twisted up in the de-power line, safety leash does nothing because it's attached to the de-power line. Lucky I knew some good safety procedures.
It's important, even if you ride a bow kite to know how to get out of a sticky situation - don't get the wrong impression that they're completely safe.

I'm with Fitzy - it's always funny until someone loses an eye!

dan OK says "rule #one: When i stuff up make sure Im the only one who gets hurt" ... maybe on the water ... but I'm sure that family and friends of those seriously hurt or have died kite surfing are STILL hurting long after the event.

The "A" in "CLEAR" is for Attitude - it's there for a very good reason - if you joke about safety then one day it's gonna bite ya on the arse and many people will be paying for the consequences of your choices.

Hey Ian i kind of get that. Point is to be totally safe you need to do nothing.; hence how safe is too safe.
Im kind of getting bored with people talking this sport down as so super seriously dangerous that only the latest bow will allow us mere mortals to harness the great and powerfull elements.
My point is somewhere in the danger lies the thrill. If you landed gently back on the water right way up everytime this sport for me would last about as long as my jet ski (3 outings).
And im not always safe! Sometimes i dont chew my food properly. Sometimes i dont turn my appliances off at the wall when i've finished using them. Sometimes when i eat i dont wait an hour before swimming.
Yes i could live safer. But how safe is too safe???

i agree with that hey dan....
i reckon as long as ya know all the basics of how to get urself out of a crappy situation, general safety on how to protect non kiters and basic info on the weather so ya can tell if ur goin to end up in trouble... fair enough point?

Hey DAN OK

Bring your JetSki up here to the Goldie.

We regularly go out through the seaway and follow the surfline up the outside of South Stradbroke Island up to JumpinPin. No surfers, no swimmers. Plenty of waves.

Then it's a few hours kiting at one of the best spots in Aussie and home again back through the surf.

Have been riding the Ski's up there since 1991. It's never boring.

Hey Fitzy, thats why we Victorians hate you Queenslanders your so smug.
When global warming kicks in Victoria will be the new Queensland and Queensland will be the new smouldering nowhere.

Now if you"ll excuse me im going outside to needlessly rev my car.

ps, Port Phillip with a jet ski is bland like cabbage!

There are old kitesurfers and there are bold kitesurfers but there are no old bold kitesurfers. Live recklessly and eventually it will kick u in the arse. I know a lot of people that say and said (the dead ones) "You only live once so you might as well go hard." Dude, shouldn't only living once be an excuse to get as many sessions as you can rather then just a few extreme once before inevitably killing yourself? I personally will be much happier living extreme but erring on the safe side of caution when the situation presents itself.
