the idea basically is to help us younger competetive crew out with comp experiance but also so the older crew can come have a good time and drink some piss basically i was thinking about a comp that will be announced 3 days before much like the sos comp but this one will be freestyle and we will have 3 different spots to choose from i was thinking woodies safety bay pond and maybe a kicker spot so that everyone gets different or favoured conditions

there would be 3 man heats and the prize will be some drinks for an older guy or girl if they win and lollies for someone who wins under 14 but yeh this will be judged by the riders and for the riders no sponsers just some crew having a good time and for the younger less experianced guys i hope it will help us learn how to structure our heats and ride well for competitions

the first one could be soon depending on the winds and it will be on a sunday during winter they will be few and far between but summer could look at one a month

leave bits on this thread if you have ideas or interest or if you just think it is a good idea

Competition Idea- Fun Friendly Summer Freestyle Comps

Ok basically the idea is to hold friendly freestyle competitions over summer so the different crews mix it up a bit riding at different spots and people whilst competing friendly. The aim of the game is FUN so everyone will be guaranteed a decent ride in pretty relaxed fun conditions. The competitions at first will not involve any tents, microphones etc. because we are not taking it that serious and there is a lot of effort involved in organizing that sort of stuff, particularly with the council.

The competition format I suggest to be the following:
-FREE ENTRY-Starting at 2pm or when the wind kicks in later everyone rides for about 2 hours in the same spot, doing tricks, watching others, having fun and pushing each other
-At the end of this all the riders will briefly gather on the beach vote their top three riders for the session and amongst this the Top 5 will be formed
-The Top 5 will ride for 30 minutes or so with the eliminated contestants watching
-At the end the eliminated riders will vote in order 1-->5, this score will be tallied and the winner will be announced on the beach
-Afterwards everyone back on the water to finish off the session and perhaps back to a pub or something after.

In interest in getting everyone involved I suggest possible locations for the competition to be:
- Woodman Point
- Safety Bay
- Pinnaroo
- Somewhere on the River (maybe Lucky Bay)

Feel free to suggest others. If these comps are a hit it would be good to hold them reasonably regularly. My suggestion is to hold 4 of them over the course of the summer, one at the first weekend of every month (prescheduled). People interested will be notified via seabreeze and email. If the wind looks a bit dodgy for 4 days in advance the competition will be postponed to the next weekend.

Remember its not about winning and the more the merrier, these could be great social events. It will be very low key and involve little organizing and if people cant make it its not the end of the world.

Thoughts.

It will be general impression, simply just put the riders which impressed you the most. Obviously this isn''t going to give you the most accurate results but these are only fun competitions and the results are more of a secondary thing to everyone getting together nd having a ride.

Maybe in the Top 5 we could select 3 experienced eliminated people to judge to make it easier to work out the end result and also get a better standard of judging.

Sounds like you have some good support. Hope you can get it off the ground
Follow the lead of Hardie, he managed to get the windsurfing speed stuff Australia wide, with just such a lead off topic.
Don't get detracted by the sad ones posting bullsh1t stuff in kite forums, unfortunately they have little else to do, but reckon that the tracking plan my bring them undone big time

Ok guys just to see a show of interest (I reckon 20-30 people should be enough for starters easily) PM me your details:
-email
-phone number

or contact me on my email
tom_c_02 at hotmail dot com

Also post in this thread so everyone can get a general idea whos interested. I know there must be more people interested than have posted so come on guys let me know. Even for you older guys who aren't so heavily involved in doing tricks and stuff it would be great to get as many of you down there to get involved in the social side of it and perhaps if you want help judge and support some of the youngsters. So even if your not a **** hot rider and you are keen on having a monthly get together/friendly competition in some different spots around Perth please let me know.

So far we got:
Myself (Woodies)
Brad Melville (Safety Bay)
Sam King (Mullaloo)
Dan Anderson (Woodies)
CharlDv (Pinnaroo)
Matt Vishy (Pinnaroo)
Blaster
Simon Wichtermann (Woodies)
Damo (Woodies)
Simon Walker (Safety Bay)
Jo (Woodies)
Wes (Woodies)
Poor Relative (Woodies)
Michael Bell (Pinnaroo)

and Gerad has offered to come take some photos and heckle from the beach

Ok what I'm thinking a fair few people have displayed some interest ad Damo has kindly offered a small prize for the winner courtesy of SOS. We should give this thing a trial, work out what works, what doesn't.

Obviously this idea will work a hell of a lot better in summer due to better wind conditions and regularity. Let's see if we can squeeze one in this winter sometime, hopefully sooner rather than later. Unlike he wave comp I think we should be a bit more selective of the wind conditions otherwise it could end up being a bit of a farce. This is pretty hard to do in the winter, but we will see.

For location I think flat water spots will work a lot better than choppy spots if its a bit gusty. So for me that narrows it down to Woodies and Safety Bay really, unless people want to give Pt. Walter a go on a easterly but I think it will be too hard to get it happening because Walter hardly ever works for long. Based on everyone's location I think the best spot to have it would be woodies (my biased oppinion), hard ask to get the Pinnaroo young un's to get all the way down to safety bay at short notice.

So everyone can make it the preferable day is a sunday, but saturday would be ok if the conditions look really good.

So this is what I propose for a trial run, if it works we might try and get a bit more organise and maybe hold 'em monthly in summer. It would be good to have some people either filming and taking some photos too so we can do a bit of a write up of it.

When: Saturday or Sunday when the forecast is looking good (majority of a day in the green arrows from S-SW), date TBA, will keep posted before thursday of each week, like the wave comp. Time will also depend on the forecast.

Where: Woodies (offshore side), if you don't know how to get there PM me

Entry: Free

Competitor Divisions: All

Format: 2 hour Free ride followed by a 30 minute shootout (top 5), flexible though to suit the day.

Prize: Beer

If you guys have any suggestions how you would like to change it just suggest it otherwise we will just stick to this basic Idea.

ok, hi to all. my sugestion

tom has a list going so far, the interested names can be put into a table and on the day it doesnt matter if they cant make it down or not, it doesnt matter.
hours from start time-activity
0:00-1:00, fun warm up-highlight your name on the list
1:00-1:20, first 10-15(depending on numbers on the day) highlighted kiters have 20 min on water time
1:20-1:40, second 10-15
1:40-2:00, you know how it goes.
once all people have had their 20 min being watched (1 hour should cover it) voting takes place

you place 5 votes in the table for people who you think are really doing better than you expected them to(giving it a good go). (based on how long they have been kiting and how hard they are crashing in their attempts to make moves ect)

a top 10-15 can be found and out of that you make 3 selections and place a tick next to their name, the kiter with the most ticks wins.
possible tie breaker...

this is a fun comp, if you dont like how i propose your welcome to make your own/change what you like but non-constructive criticism will probably not get your name on the list.

the first state heat i did i couldn't even go up wind properly and it was my first backroll on my bad side, if you can kite safely your very welcome to participate.

no money should be spent on this-you kite at your risk and the over all aim is to have a social, fun day.

WAKSA cant organise a day like this, this is way too informal and lacking correct procedure for WAKSA to put its name next to it yet plans are flowing for a great coming season already.

Kitecrazzy I don't mind your ideas but I would really like have everyone out on the water at the same time initially, so it doesn't turn into one of those comps that you spend half your day waiting for your chance to kite. If other people are happy with this format I am happy to go with it but personally I would much rather just have everyone out there for a good session first before we cut it down to the final five.

As for the judging criteria you have raised an interesting point, obviously there is a great range of skills who are interested in competing and pretty much the same riders will win everytime. My idea of how it will be judged will be general impression. So if you liked what they were doing then vote for them, simple. It could be a good idea for some of you groms to form a seperate division and make it the final 9.... so the top 3 riders, top 3 groms and possibly top 3 masters go through. From what I know of the scene mostly this would be pretty fair to seperate as people like simon, dan and myself are now no longer junoirs and with us out of it the junoirs would be a lot more even.

Things like this can be organised on the day based on how many competitors we have rock up from each category. But the idea I think should stay the same 1-2 hours of everyone riding then spilt up have 20-30 mins of a small top division riding (junoirs, opens and masters combined).

Another idea would be to add an encouragement award to the person who helps out, rides well for their skill level and gives it their best effort.

Also your right about WAKSA, we don't need mega orginisation it's meant to be a fun event. I guess I will keep you guys posted as to when I think would be suitable day to hold it and based on the forecast at the moment it ain't looking good next weekend. Then on the day we can make minor adjustments to the format to compensate for the conditions, how much time we have and how many riders turn up.

Feel free to make suggestions though.
