Hey Guys,

I have come up with an idea that would reflect what Australia is all about - Iron ore, The elements and Invention and Engineering.

The idea is a feature that would sit on the beach as a work of art but be functional to kite surfers. Much the same as the flying man down at Woodmans point but alot more engineering involved.

The only issue is getting a council to want to commission it, any ideas?

I would need somebody to create the work of art so that it would be astheatically pleasing but still offer functionlity - maybe somebody like Ian Young as he does sculptures, etc.

Another thing is how would I still maintain ownership of the concept without somebody stealing the idea, other than creating a patent. As I am thinking if it is successful, it would be great for famous kite spots around the would.

And it also could be a load of crap but still need to speak to people to find out what they think.

Cheers
Rich

If you engineered in a toilet it would offer a valuable element of functionality

The Aesthetic Australian Iron-Art Thunderdome.
- a pleasure to look at -
- a delight to use -

The idea certainly has merit.
You could also say it reflects what a lot of Australian kitesurfers post on forums.

Try a search for Caesar Manrique the Spanish sculptor who made a number of wind powered art structures on Lanzarote. They are quite cool and mesmerising, although that can be a hazard as many of them are located in the middle of roundabouts!

In terms of the artistic side, you would have immediate copyright as the creator/artist. If it also has some functionality which can generate a commercial return for you, a patent could be handy. It would have to be a non-obvious solution to a problem. I think patents cost around $10k in legal fees and it is a reasonably involved process. This gives you 20 years of rights in a specific jurisdiction.

Hey Rich, more than happy to work with you on this project.

Getting Councils to commission public art is tough - even with private funding getting approval to mount it in public space can be a challenge. Protecting IP is also a challenge. But I've always loved challenges ;-)

If you'd like to discuss further over a coffee or beer feel free to call me on 0414716812

Cheers,
Ian

Wind Powered Air Compressor MAX.9 P.S.I to inflate kites in an iron ore sculpture !

Will it catch your kite when you land after a session?

sounds like you are on to something here .

Goodluck , would like to have one at my local spot.

I reckon a sausage would be more appropriate.
An after kite sausage and a beer is more appealing to the masses than iron ore.

You could have a can of EB to make it more west aussie with the sausage as the wind thingo at the top.

To appease the veggies you could substitute sausage for Brocolli (I'm a fan of Boccolli) or a carrot. For the tea total-ers maybe a bottle of water.

So you have this idea which you're not letting on but you want someone else to do all the work. You're not a manager in the public service are you?

Great idea! I think...

..apart from the compressed air (wind and solar powered of course), a hook to attach your kite in self land situations, no sharp protrusions to eat kites, padded to be safe for wayward kiteboarders, anemometer and webcam linked to seabreeze

Actually Jeff2 hit the nail on the head but my idea uses a pressure regulator to adjust the pressure up to 12 psi like the new kites prefer.

I am no were near a manager, I just don't have an artistic bone in my body. I am able to do the mechanical aspect though.

Ian, if you still keen to do it, let me know?

Yeah I reckon Jeff2's onto it. Any substantial metal sculpture on a beach frequented by kiters is going to catch lots of kites - you can just about guarantee it

But I reckon it's a great idea - go for it

It would be funny if the inflation hose comes out of sculpture's penis.
Then every one from all over the world will come here to watch you and taking photos of you touching sculpture's penis.

kadkhah no thanks, I'm not gay.

if it's related to kite, it should use the wind

a vertical axis wind turbine with a compressor and making music: music on the beach is great.
it doesn't have to be on the beach, near the car park would be fine

richswing search "wind sculpture" or "kinetic sculture" on youtube, there is a lot of pretty cool art

TOPS MATE . what about this- maybe it could also have an arm like " thing" on the Adams family and you give the sculpture a block of wax and it waxes your board and put your leg rope on to

You could also use old boards from the back of everyone's shed to build a sculpture.
