Hi all,
I have recently taken up kite surfing and am in the middle of my lessons. I want to purchase a second hand kite as I am told you kind of grow out of the initial ones quite early.
I am 6ft 5in and 110kgs, so I am a big lad, I have been told I need a 12 footer, and this will do me right. I do want a kite that I can learn on so nothing fast, I am getting older now and the days of nutty adrenil rushes are gone.
I have seen some kites for sale here, can someone give me some advice as to the right kite to buy please?
Thanks all those who read this, much appreciated.
All the best,
AEC.

Dont really worry about having to upgrade. Most kites made now are suitable for everyone. Umm, kite sizes tend to be measures in metres. But a 12ft kite would be around 1-2m kite. Which is very inappropriate.
Size really depends on what winds you will be in. Where abouts in Australia are you? A good way to see a suitable kite would be to head down to your local spot on a windy day, and check out the size and type of kite people are using. Chances are they will be your best bet.
But basically stick to anything no less than a couple of years old. The modern stuff is much safer and user friendly than the old kites.

Try as many different kites as you can, from other kiters if they let you, or at your local shops to get demos. Contact Jason at WestOz (www.westozkiteboarding.com.au/) to try the Liquid Force Havoc. I dont think you will be disappointed. He should have 08 on clearance as the 09 range is fully in stock.

Hey AEC go and see Darren at Pinaroo or Scarborough (look for his van) or any of the other guys in the Perth area and try some of the gear they have on offer - as Dawn Patrol said anything of recent years is a good option - for us older guys something with lighter bar pressure is a good option to prevent any elbow issues.

Then once you have found something that may be to your liking look at the demo or second hand options they have or online here at Seabreeze - good luck with the lessons and the addiction counselling to follow - 12m - 14m should see you in good stead for 75% of the time in summer in WA

As posted before, it depends on the brand and model, but, for your weight, I think a 12m would be quite under-powered. You would be forced to wait for the 18 knot+ days to get going.

I'm surprised your instructor hasn't got a view?

Cheers.

Hey AEC, you will only be trying to fly in the mornings with less wind and therefore less power, at your weight you need a 14m2 to pull up and along in the light winds that you must learn in.

Check this link.
It provides details of all the retailers around Perth

http://www.waksa.org.au/links.aspx

12m is good for Perth but on those days when it fangs smaller is better.
Remember the limitations of your kite. 30kn is not good on a 12 no matter what the claims.

As above everyone will tel you something different about what kite they think is best. The best advice you can get would probably be from your instructor or people on the beach.
Just chat to people, visit all the shops ask as many questions as you can think of and a few more. Everyone is happy to help.

good luck.

Hey AEC,

I'm 104kg and I mainly ride a 14m, my other kite is a 10m and it's got to be a solid 20 before I really start riding it.

I ride a surfboard and a 135 I wouldn't get a board smaller than 142-145 to learn on though.

As for the kite it might be worth while sticking with the same kite you learned on.

Hey Nec

More importantly get a light wind board & not a skinny ass (shorts ova wetties) kiters board that makes them plane if you pass wind ...

Knowing you wont get out in Nuking winds for quite a while, you also dont want to want to be grovelling when its marginal or gusty - it really sucks !

Then the kite will definetaly have a broader wind range use for your weight..
More fun per session. At 80kg my light wind kite is a 13m Waroo & most others are packing up in disgust !

Either smaller high aspect or bigger medium aspect - you need the GRUNT

Turbo 3 is an exceptional kite for starting out, and keeping after you learn. Like Dawn Patrol said, stay away anything older then 2 years. Tell your instructor what you aim to achieve on a kite and he can give you a list of kites that will do the same thing. What are you trying to achive? Long driving cuts on a wave, boosting, flatwater riding with no jumps ect...

Once you know your style you can easly get one kite that will last you two to three years (mine only last one year). By then you will probably want to support your addiction with a fix of a new kite.

Hey AEC,
I think you've been given pretty good advice so far....
my summary...look for a 12 - 14 metre SLE -or- Hybrid -or- Bow type kite.
No older than a 2006 model (which usually means it has been used since 2005).

My suggestion, look at a 13m Ozone, Instinct Sport or the original 2006 Instinct. Beautifully behaved kites.

You'll also want a small kite, 8 or 9m ish I'd imagine...

if you want to buy a new kitecheap you can pick up a 08 waroo over the net from the USA for $1000 complete. If its under $1000 then you dont have to pay import tax. Also I have heard some rumours that some of the east coast shops are selling switchblade 3's cheap...

Hi all,
Thanks everyone for all the advice it is really appreciated. I have been taking lessons, did the first ones on Saturday in the gusty winds on the Swan river.
Had a mare trying to get bodysurfing but other than that it was great fun.
Actually the guy who was training me was very good and gave as many tips as possible, they give discounts of the price of the lessons against anything bought in their shop; which seems pretty much the de facto way here, so I wanted to make sure I got some seperate advice before committing.
Thanks for all the links I will do some web surfing this weekend, try and get the low down and then visit some shops.
Once again thanks to everyone who contributed, good or bad, it is much appreciated.
All the best, AEC.

Definitely don`t buy anything just yet. Until you start getting up on the board in your lessons you and your instructor will have a better idea what size kite should suite you. But talk to as many people as possible, that way you get to know what`s available out there (loads). It seems to me that any new kites , 2007, 2008, 2009, are good enough for quick learning and safety. It`s just finding the right size. I`m 97kg and I`ve got a 12m Helix 2008. Don`t know if it`s a brilliant kite cause I haven`t tried many kites, but it works well for me for now. Good kuck.
P.S. There`s still time to pull out of this game, get`s very addictive. Like the rest of us you will need thearapy.

$520 US for kite + $200 USD for bar and lines = ~$1000 Aus dollars give or take. Purchased at the start of this week with free shipping. Looks like a bargain to me
