Never thought I'd need an impact vest....came a cropper a week ago from stuffing up a big jump and landed hard on my side. End result, broken off cartilage from where the side of my waist harness dug into my ribcage, which will now be a permanent weak point. So....to keep kiting, change to a seat harness (to damage ribs once is bad luck, to line up the waist harness with the same spot on my rib cage would be stupidity) and get an impact vest for more protection.

Question is - what impact vest to get? Anyone got a recommendation? There doesn't seem to be a lot sold these days? Can I use a wakeboard/waterski impact vest? Will they work with a seat harness?

Any advice gratefully received....

Hi,

I've been using an O'Neill Vapor which is a wake vest for the past few years. Really good protection core + side areas of ribs whilst learning unhook stuff + loops. Very snug fit without any rubbing issues when worn directly on the skin. Not good if your looking for additional floatation though but an added bonus is that it keeps me toasty in the winter too!

I've only ever used with waist harnesses so can't comment on the use with a seat harness - also the only vest I've used so can't compare. If your over Altona way your quite welcome to try mine out, just give me PM.

I use a NPX one ocassionally and its pretty good. I reckon take a look at the Liquid Force ones, the 2012 series. There are three kinds that differ in comfortability, flotation and features - one of them should suite.

Snapped my sternum and broken ribs twice surf riding, tried a few different vests but am happy as with my naish defender vest ,really comfy can use it with a seat or waist and excellent protection that wont break the bank.

Thanks Rich, sounds like a good option and thanks for the offer of a try out. Only issue is I think it's now out of their current range, but if I find some stock I'll give it a go.

Anyone else have a recommendation?

Thanks Radman and Meatpie. I've seen both those vests around, I'll try them out.
