Hey,
Contemplating purchasing some gear from www.realkiteboarding.com and was wondering if it would incur any extra costs when coming into the country. I heard it is shipped as a gift no charges apply?
Thanks
Matt

If you have something declared under $1000AUD (sent via Airmail or Courier) then it will not have any GST or Customs Duty Incurred. Anything over $1000AUD and you will be slapped with 10%GST + 5% customs duty (I think thats the rate for sporting goods).

See if the retailer will under declare the value of the order.

Hmmm, well its costing under 1000 but you would be refering to retail or the price you could purchase it for in Aus right?
Thanks
Matt

They would declare it the price you paid from their store (ie, their invoiced price).

Hey Vishy, im pretty much 90% sure zhenjie is right.Ive just bought a housing from the states, I looked into all the taxes etc,b4 I payed for it, to make sure it would be worth my while. Im just not sure if the taxes vary with what ever youre bringing in.
Zhenjie's suggestion of under declaring is a good un( not that im endorsing tax dodging?????)

Here's the link...

Generally, I have found it's not worth buying kiting gear direct from U.S. once exchange rate, freight, after sales support, etc. is factored in. However, the Aussie dollar is a bit stronger against the U.S. these days (still not great...) so you might do alright. I was going to bring some kiting gear back with me from the states last Xmas while on holidays and found I could get a better deal back in Oz at my local with a little bit of haggling. Good luck.

My mate bought a kite from the US for $800 and got hiht with GST but no tax.
I think it's all a bit hit and miss as I've bought stuff and sometimes had to pay GST and 5% tax. Othertimes I get it here with no customs.
You could always buy it and get them to hold on to it for 12 months so then you won't have to pay any taxas you'll have owned it for so long. It'll also be worth about $50 in 12 months time

Main thing from buying anything from abroad is what happens if it isnt what you expected, faulty or damaged goods? You going to spend $200 to send it back hoping you get a replacement? Support your local businesses

I just got a board from real too, got the mission with 07 luxury straps, total including shipping turned out to be $670. I usually get my gear here in oz but hadn't seen this board anywhre and definately not at this price. It got here real quick and no duty or GST as it was under a grand.
