I just thought I'd put it out there but there seems to be a bunch of surfer style kiters ripping and having a ball.
Is this doable for the masses, and does anyone know any of these guys?
cheers

It just takes practice and patience in smaller surf conditions, most of the guys I know, in fact all of them switch to strapped when its really big, but otherwise there is a core bunch who always ride strapless.
Something for the masses, probably not.
Thats why you don't see the masses out in the surf anyway, or if they are out they tend to be out on smaller days on TT's with straps.

Its not that hard, getting good at riding toeside is important, so is learning to gybe (move feet during/after changing direction of travel), so that you are on your preferred stance when going upwind/out through the waves, and when riding waves.

you'll get a lot more strapless kiting on the northside, must be the lattes making your feet sticky or something.

get an only surfboard put crap loads of soft wax on it and give it a go, not using a leash will teach you not to fall off quicker, getting over waves is all about controlling your speed, knowing when edge and release and using your legs. its good fun.

I like to jump over the wave and let my back foot go lean forwards and find your landing.
hoping that your foot ain't behind your board

ITS FUNN

I'd never surfed before last year, although have been kiting for 4 years and snowboarded a lot. I've managed to pick up strapless kiting to the point where I can gybe and am comfortable in small to medium surf. It really isn't that hard to get going but, like anything else, it seems incredibly difficult to get really good. Heaps of fun though and well worth learning - just to give some variety!

I started riding a strapless tough light that i can also surf with. Best thing i ever did. I Have picked up my tt maybe 4 or 5 times this year. It took me a while to learn to jibe and gain confidence in the bigger surf, like being a noob again, but it has improved my kite skills, and my surfing. I can catch 50 or 60 waves in a 2 hr session with a kite opposed to 10 or so just surfing! Defiantly do it!

Just getting into it- easier than I thought, looks really hard but if you just get out there and give it a go you may be surpried. Bucket loads o fun- can't wait for the next session !

PS- 2868, 3825 me- that is a good way around the censoring !

It's not hard-just get a surfboard-about the same size as you surf and go do it-I haven't ridden a twin tip for years no-just not interested in that style of riding. Try and get a look at Ben's Open Road DVD-there's some great unstrapped riding in there.

Just go do it.

Unless is was over two foot, then it must have been Brien!
