Hey guys, just a head's up, my personal valuables insurance company (HBF) has declined to pay for stuff stolen off the beach while kiteboarding back in November.
I probably will try to negotiate this, but they say if it's unattended, it's not covered.
I cant think when of when any theft (other than a mugging) would occur when stuff was "attended"!
The stuff was in clear view, I saw the thieves, but just couldnt catch them!

I am looking at other insurance options as we speak.

I got my car stolen last week and found out that the gear in car wasnt covered.
I called aami today and they have a items anywhere [policy - so I took it out on top of my contents -
I have $5000 of gear unspecified which is covered anywhere in australia and 30 days overseas when travelling
it cost about $140 extra - but I reckon its worth it.

Had some suss guys casing the car park at Coolum today ,,,,,,we waited for them to leave before we did a downwinder....

I work for Loss Assessors and I think you will find that with most of the big name insurance companies you can get seperate cover for specified and or unspecified items that leave the house. You will have to pay a seperate excess for these items and it is a higher premium too but well worth it. Allianz is a good one for this kind of cover.

My experience has been similar with insurance - unspecified items (to a value), under home and contents policy seems to be the way to go. Has anyone seen / heard better than the AAMI deal mentioned by brucex?

ALLIANZ SURECOVER GOLD HOME looks pretty good to me, it covers all my kite boarding/surfing gear plus other stuff too (laptop, sunnies, ipod) etc, all unspecified
As long as each item,s value is $2000 or less .
This will go up to a combined value of $7500.
There is no extra charge for this, it,s all part of the insurance package.

And its around $150 less than what i was allready paying for home contence insurance (RACQ) who rejected covering kiteboarding equipment.
Also rang AAMI who do cover kiteboarding gear but they were around the same price as RACQ.

Anyway hope this info helps anyone looking for insurance.

Hey all, yep, have done the insurance trawl, but basically appears unless gear is locked in house or car, no insurance will cover it.
HBF still fully exclude cover for all kite gear, aami, cgu, gio (for travel), offer good cover tho you pay for it.

Moral- Dont ever leave anything on the beach, even if you think it's a safe and "attended" place.

Hi All
i have home and contents insurance with AAMI and part of the contents insurance is portable goods insurance. $40 a year per $1000 unspecified and it covers everything from Ipods, laptops, golfclubs and yes even kitebhoards that are stolen from the beach while your untangling your first kitemare!

last year had my Liquid Force 07 151 Proof stolen from the beach and reported it that night and they sent out a cheque the next morning.

and if any one gets offered a cheap board as mentioned above ill double what you paid for it if you give me the address of the low life that stole it.

I very much doubt any insurance would cover gear left unattended on the beach. The insurance company will say you did not take any reasonable steps to protect your gear and chances are they would be right.

I have nominated my kite gear as portable valuables so that if they get stolen from my car or a holiday house or whatever then they are covered.

BTW. Why do people take stuff down onto the beach and leave it there? Why not just lock everything in the car? Maybe leave the pump on the beach if you need to pump up on the beach.

Also, insurance companies will generally depreciate anything you try to claim so having your 3 year old kite stolen is not likely to get you a nice new one.
