I have done a bit of a seach and cant really find the info I'm looking for so thought I would put myself out on a limb and ask the forum about insurance.
Each time the topic comes up there is numerous replies with the theme: rip-off, deal-with-it, and take your own responsibility: and I assume I will get all of these and more. I basically cant afford to lose all the gear and start again

But, before I do the big ring around, can people advise what they have found to be best for-
1. theft/loss/damage insurance- Home and Car. (I have found HBF home and personals insurance doesnt cover kite or board as it is defined as an arial device, funny, I am not really at that stage yet!).
2. Travel insurance- I am off on a kiteboarding holiday soon, and cant really get an assurance about cover for the gear.
3. liability insurance- I assume AKSA/WAKSA.
4. Personal health insurance- I'm pretty sure any sporting injury is covered.
5. Income insurance- this I know is covered for kiting without extra premiums in the few companies I have checked out.

It would be great if I can get all this info in one place- here!

Regards to all,

Nic

get it registered as sporting goods worth over the undeclared limit as a sum value. if they make you pay for it then they basically accept that they cover it.

CGU just replaced all my gear. It was covered under my household insurance and was stolen from my Garage in our appartment complex basement. There was no issues they replaced my boards and kite plus a host of other gear that was stolen. Making a claim was easy I had everything replaced within 10 days. It would be hard to go past them. Also have vehicles insured with them and again claiming is a peice of cake. I don't know if they are the cheapest or not but they have been so good, i don't care.

Hey Nic,

Glad you brought this up. I can't get a straight answer from my house insurance (QBE) about kite gear etc. Keen to check out the options.

Are you coming to the ocean side this summer? Those lumpy bits of water sure do make tempting little launch pads everywhere you look...

You lucky chicken. Have a great trip to Cocos. I am collecting coke bottles in a delusional effort to get a kite holiday happening this year... The big adventure may even be as far away as Rockingham!! (pronounced Rok-an-em) Sounds exotic doesn't it?

Roll on those sweet summer SWesters!

I use AAMI for insurance and it they cover the gear it in the house but due to the cost of kite gear I got an extra insurance rider to cover it when it's not in the house. I'm sure there's away around it if your smart but i did it for peace of mind.

I have usd QBE travel insurance for years. They will cover you for your gear & whilst you are kitesurfing (not whilst in a professional event). In most cases my kites were of greater value than permitted per item and so had to list them as individual items which just required an invoice for the value of the kites to be attached to the policy.
Most other companies I've looked into will cover your kites but not yourself whilst kiting on holidays.
I've never had insurance for my boards.
Hope this helps. Pm me if you have any other questions.

I did a heap of research into this recently and I'm with Rusty. Last week I signed up with CGU. They aren't the cheapest, but they have a very good coverage for sporting equipment. I got contents and special valuables insurance cover. Cost's me $850 per year. This cover's our house contents, wedding rings, lap tops, camera and kites any where in Aus and NZ. For any lose or damage even if we do it. Eg if the little guy pulls over the TV and it breaks it's covered. My kites are covered every where except when in actual use.

Most other companies only cover sporting equipment when it is in the house. Not in your car.

Thats why I put the kite geat on a seperate rider. Insurance companies will cover anything anywhere if you pay them enough.

CGU all the way. Lost board out to sea. Lodged claim, replaced within two weeks with a brand new board ($100 excess that can be lowered for extra premium). No hassles, great service.

Must have the top cover option though.

Make sure you have receipts of recent photos of all equipment to assist with claim.

if they steel your kites out of your garage it should be covered by your general household contents...

It is more the items outside the house you worry about... as suggested specify them, jot down the serial numbers and you are home and away...

...also professional does not mean you cannot compete in a WAKSA event - you still can, as long as you are not paid to ride

Yeh! QBE defined a professional event as any event offering prize money.
However most kitesurf events offer insurance through assoications like AKSA, WAKSA, IKO, KPWT & PKRA

Hey thanks everyone!
So it sounds like QBE for travel insurance- do they really cover kite and board while in use Leading-edge? I have never been able to cover even dive gear in use for trips in the past. Cool if they do.

And for normal insurance looks like CGU (or AAMI), again surfer62 did they really cover for gear in use and in the car?

And finally, I dont think there is kite hire on Cocos!

GetFunky- I am looking forward to the warm weather and learners conditions at Cocos, and hopefully when I get back I will finally have the confidence to join you on the Ocean this summer! (too bloody cold to even think about it right now!)
