Hey there, just landed a job in Townsville, what's the kiting like there. Pretty pumped to move. Probably a few weeks till I'm there. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey mate,

Townsville isn't bad. I moved here from Perth with my 9m which is wayyyy too small. Conditions generally require a 12m on average id say. The most popular spot is Pallarenda, due East of the airport. It's not the best spot in the world but it does the job. The wind is usually direct on-shore and when it gets windy its pretty choppy - okay if your experienced but if your learning its hard to get an edge upwind. Having said that, have had some great sessions there. Beach access 14 at robertsons park is where you want to go to rig up with a grassed area, toilet block and tap. Theres another spot near the river mouth to the south of the city which is apparently pretty good though I have never kited there myself. within 30 mins south of Tville is Cungulla which can be kiting heaven in the right tidal conditions. Just over an hour south is Alva beach which is where the nats where last held. Again, an awesome spot with the right conditions and usually isnt too packed. Up north there is Lucinda and Cairns if you can be bothered driving. www.intheloopkiteboarding.com/ This is a good website for advice on local locations. Cheers!

Isn't Townsville full of crocs and stingers, and that's only in the pools?

Stingers from about now through to March I think. Good point though - stinger suit required. Crocs? well, no worse than the threat of shark anywhere else around our coastline.

well there's no off season like perth with kiting all year round. You can go all year just about without even wearing a wetty. When it is windy you normally get 3 or four days in a row in. 12m is the best size. no great whites. no car breakins at carpark (not like wa anyway) nice shallow kiting spot usually parallel to beach so you are never out wide unless you want to be.

cungulla best half tide down either side of the low. Awesome spot. not in the creek mouth but north in the gutters on the front beach

Palleranda close to everywhere (20 mins from outer suburbs) No traffic jams or delays, no toll roads. no parking fees.

beware of those palleranda toilets though...your not the only New South Welshman to come up here and they all meet each other there for secret blues business.

Townsville is a great city to live and Pallarenda a sick spot with a lot of wind all year to kite and teach.
We have to maintain CASA (you have to join the JCU Kite Club to ) , TCC, GBMPA permits but dont have a shower at the beach.
There is a few rules to follow MAKE SURE YOU KEEP OUT OF THE POWERLINES- Its a $7000 Ergon fine and a bad story in the paper!
Overall we got an awesome community in Townsville and region with kids kiting from 6yrs to an active 65 year old fella that is not only one of the keenest kiters in Australia but also one of the best kite repairers in the country.
We got some pretty good groms out there every day and heaps of local girls that rip -(Sam, Kim, Miwa, Alicia, Rach, Sarah) they could show most of the dudes how to ride.

...and if you lucky you might catch Ash Grunwald or Drapht down at our beach doing a lesson.
Happy Ville
